Default Immigration Timescale - Is travel possible during process?

Hi

Just hoping for some advice for those who have been there....

I have a valid Québec Certificat de Selection and will be sending off the Canadian forms to the High Commission in London this coming week. My aim is to be out in Québec for the start of the next school year (Aug/Sept 2010) which fits with the online guidelines of six months from form submission (I know they are only guidelines!).

What I'd like to know is what I can expect in these six months?

Having already had a temporary work permit, I know a medical examination will be required and, from reading other threads, it appears that forms for this may arrive after four weeks.

However, I'd like to travel to New Zealand and Australia for approximately 3 months but I'm concerned that I could miss something or not get the medical forms in time if I'm away.

My forms will be sent mid-Jan and I don't plan to leave for NZ before mid-March, returning after early June. Does this seem a reasonable gap between submitting forms, getting medical and leaving for travel? Should I expect anything else? Police checks maybe? I have considered delaying travel until mid-April (which, in many ways, I feel happier about) but I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Linsey
