Immigration Question - Teaching

Good Afternoon,
I am an Australian wanting to emmigrate to Canada (Vancouver) and received my
qualifications to teach elementary school in 2000.
I'm still currently gaining my relevant work experience before I apply, but I
wondering if anyone knows about the specific criteria for teachers?
Some preliminary research into the topic revealed that I would need to do some
additional courses at UBC to qualify to teach in BC (as the Canadian Content courses
required are not offered in Australian teaching degrees). One of my Canadian friends
gained her teaching qualifications in Calgary, AB, and is currently teaching in
Vancouver, and taking those courses at the same time. (Those courses are NOT
necessary to teach in Alberta).
So, in addition to my first question, assuming that my qualifications are comparable
and I gain residency, am I able to assume that I can start teaching when I get there
and complete the courses while teaching?
Thanks in Advance!
Fiona
