Hi amancharan,

Different visa posts have different policies in regards to visa stamping. I guess your visa post is Delhi which has the strange policy of requesting passport way before they are ready to issue the visa. Whereas, for applicants who have Buffalo as there visa post, they send you a Passport Request letter when they are ready for issuing the visa. They give you two options in which you can either mail your passport or bring it in person to the High Commision in Buffalo and get the physical visa stamped the same day or the following day. For applicants whose files are transferred to any embassy in the US, buffalo is not responsible for Visa issuance as the decission is made by the immigration officer in that particular embassy to which the file is transferred to. New York in particular have a set day (Monday) of every week when you can bring your passport in person between 8:00am and 10:00 am and get the passport back with Visa on the same day between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
Hope this helps.
Cheers and good luck.

For London, you can take it in in person on a Thursday and then pick it up 10 working days later on the Thursday, or you can send it in via post and they will attempt to return it with 20 days of receipt.
