Default Housing information and renters rights

The Ontario and Toronto Tenants web site focuses on tenants' legal
rights in
Ontario but also does have information that is relevant throughout
Canada,
such as how to find rental housing, discrimination, Canada-wide
vacancy rates and averagerents, apartment security tips, toxic mould
information, rent increases, job and skills training web sites,
consumer links and much more.

Rental laws vary widely from province to province. Ontario does not require
a damage deposit, typically first and last month's rent. Other provinces
landlords may collect damage deposits and keep it in their own bank. It is
rare for a tenant to get the damage deposit back...even when there is no
damage. Other provinces have a third party government agency hold the
damage deposit.

It is illegal in Ontario for landlords to request a "damage deposit".
They may only request first month's rent and a last month's rent
deposit.
