You are correct about the job market here. We have airline pilots
driving taxi cabs and engineers cleaning vegetables in Canada.

Grad school sounds like a fine idea. You'll need typically the
equivalent of 70% (or 3.0 GPA) to get in. I expect most of the grad
schools would be very crowded by now because of the poor job market.
You can expect very stiff competition for admission. My advice is send
in your application anyway. Some good comp-sci departments you might
try are Waterloo, Toronto, and Simon Fraser. There are many other good
schools far too numerous to name.

I would stop short of saying IT is really not a good field to be in.
It's a risky industry that places very little value on past
experience. The knowledge base is a moving target. Why anyone would
spend years learning the formal basics of a profession only to have to
re-learn it in less than five years is beyond me.

I agree with what you say. I am retraining myself to get a CGA designation
as we speak and hope that'll open more doors for me in the future. Graduate
study in IT is not as valuable as in other disciplines because everything
will be out dated in 2.5 hours. At least with accounting, you get paid more
with age.

Many say U of Windsor is the best CS grad school in Canada. York U would not
be a bad choice either though one of my friends there said there are lots of
space fro improvement. My experience was GRE score is not the determinin
factor for admission, in schools in Canada or USA.
It's the overall package of the applicant.

An MBA might be worth considering.

Not if you are an immigrant. It's very hard to get a management position
job if you are a recent immigrant with no Canadian experience to speak of.

Dude stop going backwards .. Ecommerce needs no skill other than web development...

Get a degree in IT or CS and you will have more than enough knowledge for doing ecommerce development that is if you manage to find a job...

In my honest opinion and vast IT experience i definitly think what is valued is not your programming ablities but what functional experience you have & very frankly ecommerce is too easy to be a functional expert in ..

Try some thing like IT with wireless/finance/medical/accounting etc..

Canadian experience does not mean a whole lot in my opionion...

Management is all about communication and if a person has good experience & excellent communication ... such a person should be able to use his MBA degree regard less of his being a immigrant..

The best tech school in Canada is without a doubt U of Waterloo - more
so for CS and elec engg. US govt.'s NSA, Microsoft, many US defense
companies recruit as many grads from Waterloo, as they do from MIT or
Caltech - and that gives you a good idea about its calibre. McGill ,
Simon Fraser Univ (Vancouver) and U of Calgary would also rate very
highly and as good as any, if not better than any US Ivy league
schools in engineering/tech.

IMO while Canadian schools are very good at basic sciences and
engineering - they seem to lag in business & management skills
curriculum. If you want a good business degree my suggestion would be
to go to a toprated US school, but for core engineering or sciences
any Canadian university will give you a very good bang for your buck.

A good place to start would be the Macleans University rankings which
is a fairly comphrehensive and accurate ranking mechanism (sometimes
controversial) http://www.macleans.ca.

Good luck!
