Fingerprints & police clearance?

I'm a U.S. citizen applying to head to Canada as an independant immigrant. I picked
up fingerprints on the FBI card, but when I asked the police station for a clearance
on me, they seemed really confused by this request. What exactly do you ask for? Will
all police stations carry information on your background? I have switched cities in
the last few months. Thanks.

Visit WWW.CIC.GC.CA..
You need to take fingerprints from any BOXMAILS etc. and send to FBI head
office. Provier your ID to any police station and get the certificate in 10
minutes..Pay US$ 10.

I am sure you are not the first one to go there and ask for this sort of letter. The
people at reception desk understand.
Before going to the reception desk, I asked an officer who was walking in the
hallway, and his response was he never heard such a letter in his 15-20 yrs of
career. Got the idea ?

You take the FBI fingerprint form to your local police station and get fingerprints or Mailboxes etc will also do it. Then you send the fingerprints and a money order for $18 to the FBI, in Virginia. The address and a form to send with the fingerprints is in the application guide.
You can get FBI fingerprint forms direct from them by calling Virginia, but I can't remember the number, sometimes from your local FBI office or Mailboxes etc. have the forms as well.
Hope this helps. Once you send it to the FBI it takes about 4-6 weeks for them to send you the clearance back.
