Default End of job = end of temporary residency?

Someone asked me an interesting question today.

Work permits: if your job ends before your work permit ends, or you lose your job or you quit it even, when do you have to leave Canada?

I know that when I had a work permit many years ago my job had an end date, but CBSA added a month on it so that I could travel before heading back. Long time ago now though, might be different.

We arrived in Calgary January this year on husband's job offer so got a temp permit to last his contract. His contract is currently due to end 1st December 2018, we arrived on 4th Jan so the nice immigration man just gave us a straight 2 years with the idea that we didn't have to leave as soon as his job ended- so our permits don't end until 4th Jan 2019. (Though fortunately he's already been told he can have at least another year if he wants it so we'll be applying for an extension anyway) but maybe that means you just have to go home when your actual permit ends even if your job ends sooner? Though I guess it's then your issue to support yourself financially without a job.
His permit specifically says he can only be employed by the university as well- so I guess it means he couldn't look for work with anyone else either.

We had a three year work permit, but my OH lost his job after 18 months. We were advised that we could stay in the country until the expiry date but if he was to get another job he would need a fresh permit. Basically, if you are not working for the company that initiated the permit it becomes a visitor permit not a work permit.

Exactly as above - you can stay in the country until the end of the work permit, but you can't work for anybody else without a new LMIA/TWP so you can just stay and not work.

Sorry for the delay, I didn't see the person who asked until today and they pass on their thanks .... so thanks!

It had me thinking as well. I am on a 35 hour week full time job on my TWP, does that mean I could simply go down to part-time hours if I wished? Or take extended breaks?

As FL has said yes you can, however I would caveat that with a reminder that you might need a full-time job and/or full-time Canadian work experience to qualify for PR.
