Employment in Nova Scotia on a work permit
Hi, Does anyone know that if you are working on a work permit in Nova Scotia and your employer terminates your employment are you allowed to stay in Nova Scotia? Also, are you allowed to apply for a new job and get a new work permit?
Can you apply for any benefits as a temporary resident?
I have applied for permanent residency, back in april 2020 but haven't heard a thing from IRCC yet. I think everything is on hold due to Covid 19.
thanks

You’re allowed to stay until the expiry date but only as a visitor - you can’t work for anybody else without a new LMIA/TWP.
How did you apply for PR?
No idea on benefits, sorry.

As to finances..
How long had you worked for them - and how long have you been in Canada? Did they give you any reason for the termination? You might be able to claim unemployment (Unemployment Insurance) or possibly CERB

If your application is via PNP once you receive an acknowledgment of receipt for your PR application I believe you can stay in Canada whilst the application is processed and apply for a bridging open work permit.

That's why it's vital to know how she applied for PR, hopefully she'll come back and clarify at some point.

Re: Employment in Nova Scotia on a work permit
Thanks everyone. I am currently still employed as I am not happy with the way I have been treated and I have been put on paid leave whilst my union investigate whats going on. Still haven't heard anything from IRCC regarding our application for permanent residency which we submitted in April 2020. Does anyone know if I would be eligible to an open work permit so I can go and get a job in a different area of expertise if things with this employer do not work out? I believe I am not eligible for a bridging permit as my current work permit does not expire until July 2022.

Re: Employment in Nova Scotia on a work permit
Thanks for that information. Basically our application for Permanent residency had to be submitted by April 30th 2020 as that is when our PNP nomination expired. We did this, but as I mentioned in a previous post, we have not heard anything about this application yet. Does anyone know if our application for PR will still be valid now that our PNP has expired or do we have to reapply. Also, you say Christmasoompa that if my employment is terminated that I have to inform NS PNP. Do I still have to inform them if the nomination has now expired or do I just reapply?

It'll be a while before you hear anything, hope you can get the employment side of things sorted, best of luck.
