Dual citizenship for Indians?

I'm an Indian citizen/Canadian PR and I recently got my Canadian citizenship. I
wanted to apply for a Canadian passport and I was wondering if I will loose my Indian
citizenship and if I'm required to inform the Indian Consulate regarding my new
citizenship. Also when I travel to India, I suppose I'll need a visa. Where do I
apply for the visa and how long does it take to get it. Does India allow dual
citizenship?
Thanks

By law, yes you would have to notify the local Indian consulate. But I am not sure
how many people are actually doing it. The time you become a citizen of another
country, you would lose your Indian citizenship whether you get a passport of that
country or not.
Of course, you need a visa to visit India. You can get it from the Indian Consulate
closer to the place you live in. If you are living near Toronto, there is an Indian
consulate in down town. Check the yellow pages. You may get the visa the same after
noon or the next day.

Dual Cititzenship
I peronsaly am all for it but the Problem that exsits in Dual Citizenship is when
it comes to the Law.
For instance you commit a crime and flee the country unless the country you
are flee to (Country of Original Resence) has an Extradition Treaty in place
with that Counrty.. you may never have to be punished for a crime you commit..
So thats ust one stand Point
Scott.

Hello,
India does NOT allow dual citizenship. I think according to regulations you are
supposed to surrender your Indian passport to the nearest consulate. Using an Indian
passport when you have acquired the citizenship of another country is illegal and you
could get in a lot of hot water if the Indian government found out (How, is the topic
of great debate).
I was surfing the website of the Indian high Commission in Vancouver and came across
this document. http://www.cgivancouver.com/decnat.html.
That is the form used for renewing your Indian passport, and they make you explicitly
state that you are still holding Indian Nationality.
To answer your questions:
1) Yes, you will lose your indian citizenship
2) Yes, you are required to surrender your passport.
3) You can apply for a visa at any one of the Indian High Commissions in Canada
(assuming you are in Canada). Check out http://goidirectory.nic.in/indmission.htm
for the close Indian Consulate near you. I think its pretty fast. My nephew got
his Visa from the Houston consulate on the same day that he applied in. (his
parents applied for him). But beware, Indian High Commissions have a nasty
reputation of saying that they have never received your documents. So, if you
have to mail you application, make sure that you get a receipt acknowledging that
they did receive the documents. The SFO consulate is very famous for losing
passports.
Hope this helps. Narayan.
