Is a driving test needed for Canada?
Could anyone tell me if I will need to take a Canadian Driving Test to drive
in Canada once I've become a Permanent Resident? I currently have a full
drivers licence in the UK.
Many Thanks,
Alison.

Yes, why you got that doubt? In UK you drive on left, right?
If you have US DL, you can get Canada DL easily.

Re: Is a driving test needed for Canada?
There is a way around it.. or so I hear.
1) Brits can swap their license for a German driving license.
2) Germans can do a direct swap with a Canadian License.
Get my drift?
Might be easier to just do a test though

Re: Is a driving test needed for Canada?
it's not 100% true. If by any chance you are going to Quebec then you can
swap your UK one witohut doing any tests. However Quebec is i believe unique
in that manner, everywhere else requires some sort of testing.

Maybe not so brilliant.
Note that, in Ontario, you can only freely exchange a
German license (as well as one from the USA, Japan,
Republic of Korea, Austria, Switzerland or
Canadian Forces - Europe) and be excused from
a driving test IF you hold two or more years driving
experience from one of those jurisdictions. A person
who swaps his UK license for a German one, and then
who wants to apply for an Ontario license would
also have to show that he also has two years of
driving experience in Germany (or one of the other
countries listed)..
If you have less than two years driving experience, you will
be issued restricted driving privileges but then have to
take a road test to obtain full privileges.
At least, that's how it is in Ontario. You'd have to check
the other provinces for their requirements

You can drive for 60 days after landing with your British license.
In Ontario they have a two step licensing system where you get a G1
which is a learners license (i.e. you need a qualified driver beside
you) which you have for a year then a G2 in which you can drive by
yourself but there are restrictions and then a full G license with no
restrictions.
If you have had a British license for 4 years or more you can take the
test for the G right away. I must point out, however, that the wait
times typically run into months in the major metropolitan areas so it
might be worth driving a few hours out of the city to take your test
elsewhere if you want to avoid not being allowed to drive for a few
months.
Of course if you're *not* talking about Ontario then I don't know...

Re: Is a driving test needed for Canada?
Many Thanks,
Yes, I am talking about Ontario, and your info has been extremely helpful. I
have had my license for more than 4 years, but I reckon I'll need the 60
days to practice driving on the "wrong" side of the road and remembering to
stop at all those "Stop Signs".
