Please help with the following.

For how long can I drive in Canada with my national license ?

An international license in my country costs $100. Is it better for me to get that,
or is it better to take the Canadian driving test and get a Canadian license. ? How
much would that cost ?

Many thanks in advance.

An IDP/IDL is NOT a driving license on its own. It is a supplement to a country's
drivers license to permit the acceptance of the country license in other countries
... usually by providing a translation of the license and a simplification of the
conditions so the non-issuing country can understand the license you have.

Having an IDP doesn't give you any more time without getting a Canadian driver's
license than the law permits.

You need to find out whether the province you are coming to will accept your license
as it stands or whether you need an IDP to supplement it to drive in Canada until you
get your provincial drivers license.

The rules vary in each province.

I believe you can drive on your national license for 6 months, but it won't be any
good if you plan to buy a car and get it insured (only to hire a car, insurers won't
touch you !). I recommend taking your test immediately (like I did), it's quite
cheap ($150 approx), and you can turn up in the morning and get a cancellation at
short notice.

Wrong! The time you can drive as a new resident on your old national license
depends on the province you move to, and is not more than 60 days in any province
that I know of.

6 months is for a visitor and NOT for a resident.
