Citizenship Canada,what a joke.
Unless I'm reading this wrong, why would a guy thats born in England need to prove he can speak either English or French? Pay for a test that seems like its more of a memory game than a English test?

Because you want to immigrate to/become a citizen of Canada, a country whose official languages are English and French, and you likely weren't built with a pre-installed language pack for either of those, so the only way to know you have a modicum of understanding is to test it?

Re: Citizenship Canada,what a joke.
Because not everyone born in England can speak or write English so that everyone can understand them.
Have you never listened to people speaking, or tried to understand a newspaper article?
........... and, please note, that I am NOT talking about immigrants' children here ............. I'm talking about people who can trace their ancestry back hundred years or more.
If you listen, it's absolutely appalling how poorly so many people understand English.
Anyway, if you object so strongly, you don't need to come to Canada so you don't need to take the exam.

I've heard England is nice if you find Canada not to your liking.

I’m guessing you are talking about CELPIP/IELTS rather then the Citizenship Test?

I didn't have to sit an English Test for either PR or citizenship. I seem to remember my university transcript was sufficient.

Going through the process right now. A degree, diploma, or certificate (or equivalent - transcript, etc) from a British university is sufficient as proof of language.

Re: Citizenship Canada,what a joke.
Well the OP has named the title of the thread Citizenship Canada, what a joke. Are they referring to the actual Government Agency known as Immigration, Refuges & Citizenship Canada or about making an application for citizenship?
No language test is required for Citizenship providing a person submits proof such as and as quoted on their website We accept various certificates, diplomas and tests as proof of your language skills. The ways we measure your language skills in English or French include:
Perhaps the OP by the less than informative post details now knows why knowledge of one of the official languages is required. Perhaps they are a Geordie or a Scouser whom of course all Brits totally understand when speaking.

- reviewing the proof you send with your application
- noting how well you communicate when you talk to a citizenship official anytime during the process
- assessing your language level during a hearing with a citizenship official, if necessary

Citizenship Canada is partly the name of IRCC.
why would someone by complaining about a test that’s already included in the fee for citizenship. You don’t pay extra to complete the citizenship test!
You do however have to pay for the IELTS/CELPIP for PR or for citizenship to show proof of English (you can reuse the English test results from PR for citizenship) if you do not have any educational certificates showing that course was completed in English.
just because you didn’t have to pay for an English test back whenever you got PR doesn’t mean some of the rest of us had the same experience.
The parameters change over the years - you also have to have biometrics done now for PR but I didn’t do that back in 2015/2016.

So in other words he has not been quite clear in this thread what question he needs an answer to and you think it could be related to something else and yet he thinks IRCC should understand him as he was born in England. I hope his verbal English is better than his written English.

Re: Citizenship Canada,what a joke.
I became a citizen here just last year, and I was never asked to take any test whatsoever to prove that I could communicate in either English or French. The OP needs to handle his own paperwork and read the fine-print in the Instructions for his forms, rather than just blindly doing what his immigration attorney tells him to do.
