I don't know about citizenship applications, but Canadian Federal bureaucracy has gone haywire since 2019. There doesn't seem to be any rational reason as to why some people might take months or years to receive a response from the government for something where others might get a response in weeks.

It's probably best just to get on with your life and be pleasantly surprised when the response actually turns up.

We posted our Citizenship application pack (2 adults, 2 children) on October 5th 2023, and received the emails requesting attendance at the Oath of Citizenship Ceremony on March 21st 2024. Our online ceremony will be April 10th. So going from the date I posted the application pack to the date of our ceremony, that will be 6 months and 5 days.
The longest part of the wait was for RCMP to process my fingerprint check, the prints were sent on 4th January and IRCC confirmed receipt of them on March 8th.

Back in 2007 when I applied it was 8 months I believe. Back then there was no language test as a requirement, and no fingerprint requirement. How the authorities did their police background check on me back then, I don't know.
The application was sent to some kind of "case processing center" in Sydney Nova Scotia, and at some point back to Toronto. I never knew the difference between what was done in Sydney NS and what was done in Toronto? After around 7 months I've received the invitation to take the test, and around 1 month later the invitation to take the oath.
The test was "by invitation only" and was a muliple choice test on some oldfashioned character recognition system, where I had to use a pencil to darken each choice. They've never told me the exam results, but I think I must have passed with flying colours.

It's hard to say, however I am guessing that there must me some form of electronic record keeping for possible future reference? I would largely guess they have an IT application database somewhere where records are kept?
