Car registration when visiting Canada?

US citizen planning to visit Canada for a couple of weeks.
What if I have just bought a car, and it has a valid temporary (30 day)
registration in the rear window, but I do not have actual license plates on it
when I get to the canadian border from the US? (waiting for the plates to come
in the mail)
The plates will be mailed to me, and could even be mailed to a Canadian address
if necessary so that the vehicle would have plates by the time it left Canada.
If the temporary tag is valid when I hit the border, would there be any problem?

No, you won't have any problems. Just be sure to carry the vehicle's
registration papers with you, and more importantly, bring a passport (or
birth certificate and government issued photo ID like a driver's licence).
Both the US and Canada are very strict in requiring proof of citizenship
before allowing you to cross their borders since 9/11.
I have waited in line myself at the border many times behind cars with
temporary registrations taped in their windows, and they have made a normal
entry. Enjoy your visit to Canada!

That depends. Are you coming to Nova Scotia, and if so are you black?

damm straight you will have problems!!!!dont listen to laurie as the
plate reader at the customs booth will not read the plate as their is
none----then you will have delays certainly coming into canada and
always when returning to the US as they will have to check if car is
stolen or not. Have fun waiting especially at detroit etc In fact in
canada with a temp plate you can have problems in other provinces.

Hi there!
I had exactly the same question for the group last November, before a trip
up with my "new" car with 30-day Oregon tags. I was simply asked if I knew
what my plate number was, and I read it off the back window through the rear
view mirror. He typed it in -- no problem whatever.
For the record, when I returned to the US 10 days later, the US agent at the
border actually walked to the back of the car to look at the tag. Again, he
didn't even question it -- just punched it into the computer, and I was off.
And.... Laurie had given me the straight scoop on that occasion, thanks!

As long as the temporary registration is going to be valid for the
duration of your trip you should be OK. You might want to bring along
the bill of sale or other proof that you did purchase the car, along with
the registration document.
