I tried browsing the CCRA website, I can't seem to find any information on Canada's
welfare system. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong keywords. My questions are:

1) How does an individual apply for welfare in Canada? To get on welfare, is it
enough for the individual to just say, without any proof, he/she is unable to get
a job or loses a job? ie. how strict is it?

2) Does the welfare system in Canada prevent abuse by enforcing safeguards such as
spouse/family income background check?

If you know a hotline or phone-number in Canada where I can call to get this info,
please let me know.

Thanks Rudy (Remove for email)

Welfare is funded and provided in different ways in different provinces, since it is
essentially considered a provincial matter. Some provinces, like Ontario, have
offloaded welfare management onto the municipalities.

So, as a result the availability and qualifications of welfare will vary greatly from
place to place. In general, it is in short supply.

Unemployment is a different matter altogether, providing you have *been* employed
long enough to qualify for EI (UI - they changed the name to Employment Insurance!)
It is administered by Human Resourced Development (HRDC) ... see www.hrdc.gc.ca

Welfare or also known as 'social Assistance' is Provincial run. Check out each
province and see what their rules are for Social Assistance.

Welfare is administered provincially.

You might try searching the web sites of the government of the province in
which you live.

Thanks y'all for the replies. I actually found the requirements page for Ontario:

http://www.gov.on.ca/CSS/page/brochure/fbaindex.html

Now if only I can find the archives of previous brochures....
