Default Canadian Residency Status Query

Hello

I am new to this site. I have question regarding my wifes residency. She has been granted permanent residency in Canada, but we need to move back to the UK for a while for family health reasons.

My understanding is that as she is accompanying her Canadian spouse outside of Canada she will continue to accumulate days towards her residency status and will not lose her permanent resident status, is this correct?

Any advice or help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Hello, freyap, and welcome to the BE forum.

To maintain his/her permanent resident (PR) status, a person has to be in Canada for a cumulative total of two years out of any five year period.

In addition to that, you are correct that any time a PR spends outside of Canada with his/her Canadian spouse counts as a day that was spent inside Canada, for the purposes of maintaining PR status.

Days spent outside of Canada with a Canadian spouse do not count towards the residency requirement for Canadian citizenship.

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for responding. It's a huge relief to know that we won't be losing her PR status, especially after all the time and stress we went through getting it.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.
