I am landed immigrant in Toronto from U.S. I talked to many people in Canada and 90%
of the immigrant have horror stories to tell you about Canada medical system.

Story I : My landlady in Toronto had a bitter pain in her stomach in Jan 2001. She
wanted to get an appointment from her family doctor. She got an appointment after 6
weeks. After 3 weeks her pain got unbearable. She called her again to see the doctor
but they refused to see her early. After a week she called the 911 because she could
bear the pain. Well, she could able see the doctor and doctor asked to get an X-Ray.
Well, she again has to wait for 3 weeks just to get an X-RAY. Moreover, she has to
pay $40.00 for emergency service. After the X-Ray, it was found that she might have
stone in her bladder. Then she was referred to a specialist. Again she was to wait
for 6 weeks to see an Specialist. So far she was not given any any Prescription.
After 6 weeks, the stone was confirmed. So there will be an operation. Again she has
to wait for 2.5 months to wait for her operation. so finally she will going to have
her operation in the end of this month(June).Total time for this operation : 6
months. Every one has to pay for pescription drug. Prescription drugs are very
expensive in canada. One time prescrition can cost $30 - $100 or more..

Story II : One of my friend's wife was diagnosed with appendics. Again normal
waiting time for the operation was 3 months. She complained in between so many
times about the acute pain. But doctors refused to perform operation early.
Well, her appendicitis burst and operation was done as a part of emergency.
Luckily she survived.

Each system has its ups and downs. And then you have isolated incidents that are not
representative of the whole system.

I have lived in Boston for 4 years now and I think that the medical system here is
not fit for dogs. It used to be that they used to allow 2-3 days hospital stay after
delivery of a child, but now it is 1 day (for normal delivery, of course). We
experienced this ourselves. My 2 year old son had a bad fall and his face looked like
Mohammed Ali's after a bout with Joe Frazier. We were made to wait for an hour at the
emergency. It was a bloody mess (literally). My 65 year old mom fell down and broke
her arm. She was made to wait in the hospital hallway(!) for 3 hours, without the aid
of pain killers. I think even Cuba has a better system than Boston.

So you put it all together. Canada, US, Britain, each has its problems. I would
however think that in the US, the system is ruthless to the poor or uninsured. There
are cases where people have become homeless because of some unexpected accidents and
spending all they have on medical care. Then there was the case of the poor NYC woman
who was given the runaround when her child needed emergency care, because she did not
have insurance. While getting from one hospital to another, her child died. She was
jailed for child neglect. The list of horror stories is unending.

Oh well, you live.
