Can we extend visitor term in Canada?
Can we extend visitor term in Canada?
My friend came in as a visitor without a visa. (south korean).
Can she extend her stay after 6 months? If so, how could you do this? (ex.
by travelling to another country and coming back? does this work?)
please advise..

You can apply for an extension of your visitors status if you like, you
probably need a good reason though, no harm in trying except losing the fee
i guess i fyou are refused an extension.

Re: Can we extend visitor term in Canada?
she probably doesn't have TRV since S. Korea has a visa waiver
agreement with Canada.....
I dont think she can apply for extension.. but i'm not sure.
Why doesn't she just go to the u.s. and come back in for another 6 months?
(except S. Koreans DO need a visa to go to the u.s.)

Re: Can we extend visitor term in Canada?
whether you needed a visa to enter Canada or not makes no difference to
applying for an extension of status. The visa is just the piece of paper
extension to yoru passport to allow you to enter Canada and aquire visitor
status. So if S Korea is visa waivered as it were then she will, unless
otherwise told, have been admitted for the maximum length of 6 months. If
she wants to stay any long she could as you say just leave and then come
back later but that has much more risk of being refused re-entry if they
start questioning your motives, and like you say unless you can easily just
nip to the USA then it's also gonna be expensive to get to another country
to come back from.
Applying for an extension to visitor status is a fairly normal thing and
applies to all visitors, for example all the people who are applying as
spouses from within Canada have to routinly apply to extend their status,
especially recently, as it has been taking so long, even the US citizens who
don't even need a passport to cross the border really use the extension
application because it doesn't involve leaving Canada and so you don't have
to run teh risk of being refused re-entry, which is more tricky when you are
actually living in Canada as a visitor and applying for PR etc.
Also some of them have been told by CIC (but of course you get a different
answer each time you ask) that they will not accept leaving the country and
re-entering as a valid way to extend your status if you are residing in
Canada for that length of time and would still consider you out of status.
May not be the actual law but if there are CIC officers under that
impression then it could only cause hassles.
