Can one apply from Canada
A freind of mine has couple of question for the experts. He is
currently working for an employer in Canada under temporary work
permit. He is Australian.
1. He applied for an extension for his work permit last week and
would like to know how long the process takes for approval?
2. Can he apply for Skilled Class PR status while staying in Canada?
His employer can extend / provide the employment letter to continue
the job.
3. Can he apply from Canada or does he need to apply from Australia.
He has been working in Canada for the last one year.

it's been a while since we applied for renewal of work permit but i seem to remember it took 2-3 months.
yes, he can apply for PR whilst living in Canada but must do it through Buffalo, New York or through Australia I think. If he gets called for interview though, he would have to visit place of application.

1. About 6 to 8 weeks
2 & 3. Yes, but application must be submitted to proper visa post abroad. In
his case it may be either Buffalo or Sydney. And fact that he will have PR
application pending will not make his stay in Canada legal, so he needs to
extend his status if he wants to remain in Canada until PR process is
completed.
