BTEC National Diploma & CES

Hey guys,

So I have tried my best to find a definitive answer on here but can't seem to find anything. Basically this is my last resort after ALOT of researching.

At first I thought my BTEC would not count as I saw alot of people say WES counts 2 year BTEC as a one semester course.

Recently I saw someone say they got a 2 year btec marked by CES and they have said it was worth a 2 year year program

I have a BTEC National Award in Uniformed Public Services. The Award comes to graduating the first year. I left after the first year as I pursued my Royal Marines application (I was studying Uniformed Public Services).

My question is do people think this would count under '1 Year program'

If so this would get me enough points! but i'm unsure as it is only the 1 year. Has anyone else been in this situation where you've only done a 1 year course or something?

Thanks in advance!! :goodpost::goodpost:

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

The only real way of knowing is to submit an application.

However, note that only academic qualifications are assessed as part of an ECA not vocational.

JayJJeffery Sep 21st 2017 1:56 pm

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Regarding the vocational bit though, as a BTEC the whole point is you're mainly studying one subject (with different components to it) The forum posts I saw previously they were IT and something to do with Mechanics which are both vocational and they got it through?

I think even BTEC classes themselves as vocational

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

Hey there, I was one of the people who got turned down by WES, but approved by The university of Toronto last year.

To be clear, that was for a 2 year national diploma though in music technology from 2002, so I can only speak to that.

It makes me so angry that there isn't one standard being applied here, and the fact I wasted hundreds of dollars on WES. There is a reason their turn around times are so quick in comparison. If I hadn't of reapplied in hope, I would have given up on Canada because of them.

So don't give up and good luck!

Thanks Graeme,

It's certainly a flawed system if one gets you it and another doesn't. It should be the same all around. I've just gotta hope they consider the year I did complete as 1 year.

I'm just awaiting my certificates/for them to be sent to CES now. Ill definitely post back in here in February when i get my results (17 week wait :(:( ) to let everyone know the outcome

Just a heads up for all, both WES & CES came back negative.

Sorry to hear that, I hope that now the points have dropped a bit you are still in with a chance.

Thank you for coming back to update the forum and good luck.

I'm waiting on a b tec level 5 professional diploma in music performance with BCIT and this is killing me, I'm having trouble sleeping. If my grade assessment isn't as good as expected is it pretty much over for me? So stressful!

You should be good with level 5

I hope so Jay. What makes you think that? I struggle to find information online. Give me a percentage of how sure you are please. No pressure, I'm just desperate for an idea.

Thanks :)

Last draw was 456. Last few months they’ve all been between 440 and 460ish.

The level isn’t the only thing though, remember that vocational qualifications aren’t assessed, only academic ones count for points purposes. I’ve no idea if music is considered academic or not though.

Mine was a BTEC level 3, on my many many hours of looking I saw someone who studied Music Level 3 (2 yrs) and got it. I would say 80% but that's a complete estimate just based on what i've seen searching.

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

Mine was level 5 but only for a year...fingers crossed

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

Bizarre why they'd base it on time taken to complete a course no? If a level 3, 2 year counts more than a 5 at 1 year I'll be a bit taken back!

What's your backup plan Jay?

Also, I just filled out the express entry 'come to canada' quiz and it didn't even ask me for my education or grade analysis, just language questions (which I filled in with my predicted results) and my work experience, it then said: "Express Entry
Based on your answers, you appear to be eligible for Express Entry". What does this mean?

It means that you're eligible to enter the EE pool. But once you're in the pool, only those scoring the highest are selected and invited to apply for PR - that's when the CRS score comes in to play.

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to inform you that I applied for an ECA through ICES (BCIT) and they evaluated BTEC level 3 in mechanical engineering as "Grade 12 (High School completion)".

Any other options??

RealVileLev Apr 15th 2018 12:14 pm

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

Wow that's worrying. How long was the course? I have mine being assessed by both BCIT and university of toronto, I know people who's btecs came back as post secondary from Toronto so I would try them asap. I will let you know as soon as I have the results back from both, however I still have a long wait ahead of me.

hishamx87 Apr 15th 2018 12:33 pm

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

It was a 2 years diploma in Mechanical Engineering. And ICES evaluated it as Grade 12 High school completion. What an utter waste of money.

I have written to them to re evaluate the ECA as it's a post secondary qualification.

Still can't understand how would a grade 12 qualification be equivalent to an engineering diploma :/

Please let me know the outcome of your ECA.

RealVileLev Apr 15th 2018 12:35 pm

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

I have a letter sent from someone off this forum who had a two year btec assessed as two years of post secondary from UoT. This was in 2015 however so I hope it hasn't changed. I'd try them though, their waiting list is long however, 14 weeks :(

hishamx87 Apr 15th 2018 12:38 pm

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

There's no transparency in their methods of evaluation.

It's basically a waste of energy, time and money.

I hope someone audits them.

Sorry for not being active here guys! lots on.

I got mine assessed by both WES and UofT, both NADA.

I’m sorry to say, but even Pearson themselves say a Level 3 BTEC is equivalent to A Levels. :( https://qualifications.pearson.com/e...s.html/student

So it’s not surprising that ECA agencies are saying the same. They’re probably just looking at the website and taking the info from there!

Best of luck with the EE app, I hope you’ve got enough points without the diploma to get an ITA. :fingerscrossed:

I am sitting at 413, so currently, no chance for direct ITA.

That's actually wierd. I have already written to ICES, let's see what they say about it.

I am just wondering how can a mechanical engineering diploma be equivalent to high school:huh:

Re: BTEC National Diploma & CES

**edit** I just realised I posted this in the wrong thread, its still relevant here so will leave it. My full context is here: http://britishexpats.com/forum/immig...valent-907198/

I got evaluated today as the following:

"Completion of a college-level certificate (one semester)"

No idea if that scores me any points or not, it 'fits' the wordage used on CIC's website as "One-year degree, diploma or certificate from a program at a university, college, trade or technical school, or other institute"

(source https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...ad-report.html)

But it also says "one semester" so that kind of goes against the whole "one year" thing.

There doesn't seem to be much discussion I can find about people getting this exact result from WES, does anyone know if this is worth points?

Did you send your only BTEC Level 3 diploma or did you also include other prior education documents as well?

I read somewhere in other forums where someone wrote to WES and clarified that the "one semester" narration in the ECA is incorrect, for which, WES asked the applicant to bring a letter from his/her college to prove that its a full time course:confused:. This was provided and a revised ECA report was published.

It's worth a try.

They asked for my prior education documents, but I refused as we are talking at least 8 GCSE's and other A-Levels, the fees alone would have been over £500 - which is a lot for a gamble with poor odds.

I only sent my L3 BTEC certificates.

I've just emailed WES asking why it says one semester and if I can get that changed.

As a level 5 Parsons have it as equivalent to the 1st and 2nd years of an undergraduate degree. The question in your case is more likely to be whether music performance is classed as academic or vocational.
