Bank
I would be taking quite a bit of money with me to Canada..what is the best
way to do this? Keep it in my bank in the UK or open an account in Canada?
I know I will need to do that anyway but just wondering which bank I should
use etc etc...
Thanks

Re: Bank
Keep it in the UK and have it wired to a bank in Canada once you get here
and open one up is probably a good way to go, pretty safe.

Re: Bank
or wire it through UK bank and your UK bank's correspondent bank in canada
will hand you
the cash
charges: wiring, receiving fees
you'll need at least two primary identifications

Re: Bank
New laws prevent that from happening - most banks will NOT allow
non-customers to receive wires.

Re: Bank
No problem - it's only a recent change. The bank I work at (I prefer not to
say which it is, of course) set the policy in September 02 and have been
strongly reiterating it to staff since then.

OK, I wire my money to say Bank of Wherever, Upper Lowerton Branch,
arrive at the branch, open a new account and give the bank info to
deposit it in my account. Is that OK?

Open an account at an international branch, such as HSBC. Branches
everywhere in North America, too. Make it clear to them that you are moving
to Canada and eventually will be transferring funds. They will most likely
assist with the establishment of an account at a branch in Canada.

Re: Bank
No. If the wire is not directed to a specific, already existing account, it
would get returned. In cases where the account is new the law says we are
supposed to wait 48 hours before accepting any wires... anti-money
laundering laws and so on.
What you can do, however, is open an account in Canada first then forward
the wire instructions to the bank at "home" and have them send it.

Re: Bank
I had a hsbc account in the UK however after 6 weeks they still hadn't managed to open me a hsbc account in canada.
In the end I just got them to write me a bankers draft in dollars ,a lettter of introduction, and changed a few thousands in cash.
Then I opened an account here. However even with a hsbc bankers draft it took 2 weeks to clear. So the cash came in handy.
Custom's wanted to see the cheque and made a note of the details for there records.

And the last time I tried to open an account in Canada, from abroad,
even as a Canadian citizen, with an SSN, it was refused. I had to
appear in person.

Re: Bank
Unless you are really well known to the bankers doing the account opening
they will not comply with the request - it is against policy but many
bankers will bend this rule for someone known.
Any person from any nation who can furnish sufficient identification,
however, can open a bank account in Canada.

Re: Bank
Hi thanks for all the replies on this it has helped me a lot. I am going
back to Canada in a couple of months time, but only for a holiday at the
moment, as I have loose ends I need to tie up in the UK. Could I open a
bank account then? What ID would I need? Any recommendations on which bank
to use?
Thanks
Graham

Re: Bank
Do not make everything so complicated. Get a bankers draft made out in
Canadian dollars (Barclays will do it for 15 quid). Then open an
account at CIBC, TD Canada Trust or any bank in the area you wish to
settle. Just take along your immigration papers and your passport to
open an account.
Banks like it when you give them money.
