Default advice needed - DIY visa applications vs immigration lawyer

Hi

My husband has a job offer in Canada. We want to go on a permeant visa. Having done some investigation we believe we can apply through the express entry skilled trades under NOC 8255.

We have started looking for an immigration lawyer which seems to be a bit of a mine field! The prices they are charging are around $10,000 which seems a lot.

I'm looking for some advice about how easy people have found doing the visa process for themselves??

Many thanks

Cally

I suspect that most of the people on here would have done it themselvess, and unless you have specific circumstances such as criminal records, then you should be able to do it yourselves, but others will be along shortly, when they wake up over there, to give more specific advice.

Hi, and welcome to BE.

As said above, unless you have complicated circumstances (criminal history, medical issues etc), there's really no reason to use a consultant. The vast majority of people on the forums do it themselves.

Are your husband's potential employer's prepared to wait for him to get PR, or will you be moving over on a Temp Work Permit first?

Even then it is not hard to do it yourself if one is organised and can read instructions. I would (did) save the money.

Does not take much for my OH to convince me not to spend $10K!

We came on TWP, the company hired an immigration lawyer even had the guy waiting at the airport when our flight arrived in case we had any problems (we didn't). However we did the PR stuff ourselves a year or so later. Its not hard to do yourself, it is a bit of a pain getting the documents together and filling out the forms, but its not difficult.

As one of those with "complicated circumstances" I used a lawyer but not until the circumstance came up. We did all our forms etc by ourselves, submitted, and only when my criminal record came up did we employ a lawyer. Whilst it has still cost us a lot I'm sure we have saved thousands of dollars.
