Hi Doberman,

my wife and I and the kids came out here in May from Cardie and forget
all the boolx on this posting, just think of yourself!!
I am in the Edmonton area working in health care and I would advise
you to hold station and really be sure this is what you want!!
Canada is not the grail you seek.
It has cost us far more than we ever imagined. Where are you thinking
of living?? Do you have rellies out here??
Consider the fact that if you move out here, you could not afford to
move back with UK house prices the way they are, as we have now
found. Canada is not the cut price version of the US, without guns,
people imagine. All the big cities here have horrendous gang problems,
gun crime, theft etc. I think more people have been shot dead in
Edmonton last year, than in the whole of the UK.

Advice. Look at the Multiple Listing Service (
http://www.mls.ca/mls/home.asp ), and decide what you can afford, then
add at least $30K, for the unseen expenses. Car insurance here is also
extortionate, and add to that the cost of health insurance in the
interim for at least three months while you try to get a job. Read
this newsgoup regularly if you are really interested.
The hot talk here in Alberta recently is of rising power costs, petrol
(gas) costs, generally, the cost of living in Canda This is not that
different from the UK, except of course the weather here can be
shiite. Severe winters, extreme cold, brass monkeys.
The best advice I could give you is, get a job (or at least be assured
of one)before you come here unless you fancy flipping burgers at
Wendy's for the next year or 3.

Good luck

Rubi!!

I would agree with most of what is said here. Between Australia,
Canada (Quebec excluded), and New Zealand, Canada is probably the
country the most difficult for a British person to settle in. Long
gone are the days when being British had a significant advantage when
one arrived. Of course being British does give one more of an
advantage than non-native English speakers and it is slightly easier
to have your qualifications recognized.

Every immigrants experience is different and I dont wish to be
negative, but if you are seriously thinking about immigrating anywhere
you must prepare yourself phsycologically for set-backs. These could
come in many forms. For the majority of people from developped
countrys who immigrate to Canada, their standard of living will be
less than that they had in their country of origin. But there is more
to immigrating than that and if you search something different and are
less concerned about your financial postion then Canada is a good
place for that.

Good Luck

from the many british expat forums i have read Australia seems to me the one
where people encounter the most problems and hostilities.

I know in Canada i have yet to meet anyone with any negative attitude
towards the British and of course as you say there is no advantage over
anyone else but still no real disadvantages. It seems to be, i think because
Canada has always had a more placid relationship with the UK and most of
it's preoccupation is taken up with not liking the USA rather than the UK,
where as people going to Australia it seems to me find a greater residual
dislike for the UK and more specificly those from England due to it's past
relationships and history, and i have read many accounts of people not so
mcuh encountering hostility but a kind of lingering negativity towards the
"pommy bastards" hehe.

I am sure there are friendly and unfreindly people everywhere but from my
reading of posts by people in various places from the UK who have moved to
Canada, USA, Australia, NZ, south africa etc it seems to me Canada and New
Zealand is where they have encountered the least issues and the most in
autralia, or maybe just certain parts of australia and a few in the US.
