Thanks, yes, which I suppose in a warped kind of way, was just as well. Getting parts for the Chevy here would have been more of a nightmare!

Hi I am also trying to find a way to insure my English car which is a left hand drive in Hungary.
In December of 2009 a woman ran into my car which was parked on the street. She of course did not have any insurance and the time to repair was 11 months because of this. The issue is that I was not able to return my car for its MOT and therefore now have my car stuck in Hungary without the ability to drive it.
Anyone out there know of any companies who can insure it. As I said earlier it is a left hand drive.

Re: Van Insurance

I have finally found an insurance company that do long term vehicle insurance/without a time limit, for all the 27 members of the EU, for both RHD and LHD vehicles. They specifically cater for expats and workers in the EU that opt to take their own vehicle. They also do annual breakdown cover while abroad.
The company is: Stuart Collins & Co., 114 Walter Road, Swansea
Tel: 0044 (0)1792 655562 website: www.stuartcollins.com

I have not spoken to the company as yet.

I tried them a while ago, and they said I had to be a UK resident

This thread rather frightened me that our vehicle(s) were not covered whilst on an extended stay here in Hungary. Sandy emailed NFUmutual and received this reply...

Hi

With reference to the possibility of taking a vehicle abroad for business
purposes. If you take either CP03GZJ or R682STH you will just need to take
with you your certificate of insurance for the vehicle as the 'green card '
to travel in the countries you listed are covered on the back of the
certificate. However, if you will be travelling through other countries
please do contact us as the certificate does not cover all countries.

There is no time limit on the length of the trip abroad, however, if we are
looking at + 3 months we may need to look into this further. We also
cannot apply any Breakdown cover whilst abroad on the vehicles as they are
used for business purposes.

If you have any further queries regarding please contact us.

Many thanks

Jenni

I tried Stuart Whatsisname Insurance who wanted about £1000/year to insure my £1200 Fiat Ulysse, ex taxi!!!

We are driving over to Hungary in our car and have it registered at a UK address for a few months (insurance cover abroad at no extra cost for 90 days). Then we will be driving it back and selling it - it seems the only viable option.

Hi there,

Just read the post above and i am desperatly searching for an insurance company who can cover my van while i move my stuff back to the UK from the Netherlands. I will also need to make trips during the year to sort out paperwork and to clean out the old house.

I tried Stuart Collins but they only insure cars.

Thanks for any advice you can offer

Try Bridle Insurance - they may be able to help via a company called Groupama - not sure if they cover vans though.

Re: Van Insurance

Just looking for any useful info and came across an interesting quote regarding vehicle insurance:
"Vehicle insurance policies from all EU-countries and some non-EU countries are valid in Hungary based on bilateral or multilateral agreements. Visitors with vehicle insurance not covered by such agreements are required to buy a monthly, renewable policy at the border."
Has anyone ever bought insurance at the border? I can't find any more info on this as yet, but if anyone can contribute or maybe take the time to find out when at the border it might help, in a number of ways.
