Update for British Nationals
#1
I came across this on the Brit Embassy FB Page:
IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR BRITISH NATIONALS
We are aware of concerns about Hungary’s new immigration law, which took effect on 1 January 2024. This includes a cultural knowledge exam requirement from 1 January 2025 for third-country nationals applying for permanent residency.
If you hold a a residence permit issued before 31 December 2021 (shown on the picture, called “Article 50†National Settlement Permit in the “Engedély tÃpusa†section and there is also a reference to Article 18 of the Withdrawal Agreement in the “Megjegyzések†section), these new rules do NOT apply to you. Your rights are protected under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement.
What you need to know:
You must renew your permit when it expires (due in 2026).You will be able to do this within the framework of the National Residence Card Scheme, but under the same preferential conditions as before.
The renewal process remains simple and free of charge – you’ll only need an application form, a valid passport, and (if applicable) proof of family relationship.
Your new card will provide you with the same rights that you have now, thus you will not be required to pass a cultural knowledge exam.
Your new card will be valid for 10 years and can then be extended for further 10-year periods indefinitely.
If you arrived in Hungary after 31 December 2021, passing the cultural knowledge exam is required if you would like to obtain a National Residence Card or EU Residence Card. We encourage all UK nationals to familiarise themselves with the renewal process well in advance.

I would believe the British Embassy over Daily News Hungary, they aren't the most accurate, up-to-date, well informed source that they like to think they are.
Half of it is rehashed and translated at least three times before we get to read it.
If unsure I would ask OIF directly:

To help third-country nationals living in Hungary better understand the new Hungarian immigration law and answer questions relevant to their specific situation, the Immigration Office has created an information line.
- Call: +36 1 463 92 92
- When: Monday to Thursday between 8 am and 4 pm, and Friday between 8 am and 1:30 pm
- Talk to an expert in English

also on Helpers:
which ties in with what the British Embassy said:

this is what you need
I am an EU citizen. Will I be affected?
No, you will not be affected. All EEA nationals enjoy the privilege of unrestricted movement and residency, and this does not change with the introduction of the new law. Moreover, while the Immigration Office will not accept new residency applications in January and February 2024, EEA registration requests can still be submitted in this period.

I have that residency card so hopefully will be ok as assured under the withdrawal agreement but the news article casts doubt on that ... but I will trust the official statement over the news article ! I suspect the article is not about people from the UK which was part of the EU / EEA but those who are from countries that were never part of the EU / EEA ...

Hi folks, hope you can help. This looks like the most relevant thread for my query.
I have the Withdrawal agreement residence permit, which I did back in 2020. From what I've read these are for 5 years, and then can be renewed, no questions asked. However, on my permit, I have an expiry date of 2027, start date of 2022.
Is this an error, or just an additional allowance because it was just before the agreement deadline /Covid?. Has anyone else obtained a residence permit from 2020 with the same dates.
Thanks!

I think it's weird that we have to complete an application form to renew the residency permit. I would have thought it's a simple photo and fingerprint job.

I better check when mine runs out. When I applied fir temporary residence I filled in what they called a C.V. but think something was lost in translation. Basically, it's a history of your background and I fitted all that on A4 sized sheet. If they ever want to see more information I've already got a file with all my school and college qualifications. Adding to that my 1st and 2nd Dan Black belt diplomas for Shotokan Karate.
