Restaurants in Budapest
Hi all, I'm coming to Budapest for 4 days holiday in July -- can anyone recommend good restaurants? Obviously I'll have a look through TripAdvisor, but I'd prefer to hear from people who actually live there.
Budget, cuisine, decor and so on are not important: it's all about the food (and wine)!
Thanks in advance.

Re: Restaurants in Budapest
Restaurants are a special problem in any Tourist centre ...
There are restaurants (I'm not sure, but I think there's more than one) with Michelin stars ...
There are restaurants in the middle of Budapest (Vaci utca) - probably better to avoid those expensive "tourist traps" ...
There's a very nice jewish (but not kosher) restaurant: Fülemüle aka Nightingale (we went there by accident and found it very good) ...
There are many food stalls/small places in the Market Halls ...
And something a bit OT, maybe interesting for an evening out (and for younger people):
The "ruin pubs" (Rom kocsma) in old industrial facilities with lots of drinks and music, often live ...
Enjoy!

One of the best places to find a range of restaurants in Budapest is Ráday Street (just off Calvin Square - Kalvin Ter). It is the equivalent to London's Soho and has an eclectic mix of restaurants and bars for all tastes. Also, Costes is there which was the first restaurant n Hungary to receive a Michelin star.
Enjoy :-)

Re: Restaurants in Budapest
Budapest is teeming with restaurants of all shapes and sizes. It has 5 Michelin starred restaurants (at least last time I saw anything on it) and I think it was the Onyx which won the Bockuse Dor Europe competition recently
See here for something about that
bne IntelliNews - Good to be Hungary as Bocuse d’Or final comes to Budapest
Of course, the prices of those places are way above what normal Hungarians can afford - in fact, the service charge would be above most locals pockets. (Watch out for that, a 15% or even a 10% fee added onto an already expensive menu can hurt.)
if you shop around you should find very affordable places, where locals eat.

Well my current favourite is Csiga on Rakoczi Ter. It's not posh but the food is good, the prices keen, it has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff are friendly. It's always on my list when I'm in town.

Re: Restaurants in Budapest
Really enjoyed our stay in Budapest. Beautiful city, easy to get around, loads to see, friendly, reasonably-priced, excellent food and wine – will go back at some point. A few recommendations for those new to it:
Hachapuri
Absolutely brilliant Georgian (as in the country, not the US state) restaurant, on Andrassay Ut 3 right by the Big Bus Tour office and more-or-less opposite the Opera House. Fantastic selection of food: salads, dumplings, meats, stews, deserts, as well as wine and beer. We went just for lunch (happened to be passing and it looked good), and if we hadn’t already planned our evenings we’d have gone back. I don’t quite know how Georgians ended up in Hungary (its a long way), but I’m glad they did. Superb.
Rosenstein
Jewish restaurant recommend by our Airbnb hosts. Fine dining, fine wine, fine service, reasonable price. Rich menu: venison, pate de foie gras, wild boar, goose and so on – difficult to chose, but was truly excellent. I tried several Hungarian red wines (by the glass), and all were superb. It was packed when we went on a Thursday evening, so you’ll probably need to book. Another superb one.
Paprika
Also recommended by our hosts, and offering hearty, filling and delicious food. And, yet again, superb Hungarian wine. Ample choice, good prices, nice atmosphere, friendly service – what more can you ask? Would definitely go back.
Big Bus Tour
There are several companies offering tours – allegedly some of the others have a more frequent service, but ours was every 20 mins which is ok when you’re on holiday. Well worth doing; got a 2-day pass which allows you to hop-on-hop-off and includes a river cruise and the funicular railway.

We've also been to Paprika many times. It never changes, huge plates of food, not cheap but good value for money.
If you want a show whilst you eat, the marble bride in Buda is more authentic, the owner is part of the show and the traditional fish soup is very good.
Our favourite restaurant is Pata Negra, one in Buda by Lukacs thermal baths and one in Pest. First class tapas food with a super take out wine option.

Also, a great place is Két Szerecsen by opera station, my tip would be dont have dessert as there is an amazing sweet/cake shop round the corner with awesome sorbets and another awesome icecream shop across the road.

I would highly recommend - Csarnok Vendéglő - at Budapest 1054, Hold Utca 11.
Very nice, traditional Hungarian food and drink, with excellent staff.
