Default Relocating to Hungary

Myself and my husband are looking at moving back to Hungary from UK.
We lived there for 8 years and now wish to return.
Can any one advise me the new procedure after Brexit?

TIA

What residency status did you have when you were last here?
Are either of you Hungarian (or could be Hungarian)
When did you leave Hungary

I suggest you have a word with the embassy in London.
4 years of absence has probably ceased your permanent residency. There are circumstances where you don't loose residency if you leave for for good reason and not for permanent residency elsewhere e.g.family reasons (so answer questions carefully with this in mind) but I am not sure what the time limit is.
Investigate your Hungarian descent options I believe Hungarian parents or grandparents give easy access to citizenship - further back you will have to ask. If your residency has lapsed it may be easier if you get Hungarian citizenship by right of descent rather than renewing residency. If you get citizenship then you have a right to live here and your husband can come in with you.

Without either of the above option available I think you will have to start again from scratch (unless someone knows different) as a 3rd country national applying for entry into Hungary.

I assume there would be a Hungarian Government website on this and should also be covered on the UK Embassy website. I think that the BalatonBrits website
may have a fair bit if info as well

Also remember that things like your UK driving licence may not be valid in Hungary and (if same as Spain) you will have to take a test in Hungarian. Needs thoroughly researching.

I believe you just have to exchange your UK licence for a Hungarian within 12 months, no test required just fees and a translation. (Unless things have changed in the last few months)

EDIT from UK gov website:

Exchanging your UK, Gibraltar, Jersey and Guernsey licence

If you live in Hungary, you must exchange your licence for a Hungarian licence within 1 year of moving to Hungary. You do not need to take a driving test.

To exchange your licence, you need to provide:
  • photo identification eg. passport
  • address card (lakcímkártya) or an official document from the immigration authorities proving your right of residence in Hungary (residence permit)
  • proof of health assessment from your doctor
  • UK driving licence
  • proof of payment of the administration fee (this may vary between £4 to £15 depending on your individual circumstances)
You do not need to provide a translation of your UK licence.

You must go to the following Budapest government office (Budapest Főváros Kormányhivatala) (in Hungarian) to exchange your licence:

XIII. district, Budapest Főváros Kormányhivatala
Központi Okmányirodai Főosztály
1133 Budapest
Visegrádi utca 110

In Hungary the GP does the driving medical and the eye test. The eye test is fairly basic, there is a check with a standard eye chart ( I think the 5th line down is the minimum) and sufficient periphery vision (I think about 120 deg.)

That's correct! I renewed my driving licence last week and as you say the GP uses the standard eye chart. All over and done with within a couple of minutes.
