Hi all ,
I’ve been thinking about leaving the UK and living abroad for some time now .
our once great lands are descending into a rancid pit .Crime is soaring and it’s unpleasant
living here .
my wife and I both work remotely from home .
we own our home and will have around 200k equity once sold .
my questions are …
how easy/difficult is it relocating from uk ?
Is the broadband spread across Hungary or best in cities ?
and does anyone else on here work remotely for a uk company and how do you find it ?
I’ve read car buying can be tricky , is this true ?
Is the process of buying a home similar to the uk ?
thanks in advance Terry

Grass is always greener on other side, until you step on other side.
Why did you pick Hungary? Was is because it seams cheapest?
Do you speak lingo? Have you ever tried learning another lingo?
Have you spent any time in Hungary?
Answering above questions will answer some of your own questions.

Hi! Good idea!
Can't answer questions about cars (we live in Budapest). Likewise situation re working (we are retired). Post brexit there will be hoops for you to jump through (unless you hold an EU passport)
Internet connectivity (generally) -
I guess better in the cities than outside, others will confirm / deny this.
Same as regards the language, English widely spoken in Budapest, less so outside.
Buying a property. Single lawyer involved, paid by the buyer. Lawyer's job is to ensure the transaction / contract is legal. 4% stamp duty on purchase.
Good luck!

Broadband connectivity is above the EU average and in 5G Hungary has made significant progress towards the 2030 digital connectivity targets. In 2022, 5G coverage in Hungary increased to 58%, an increase of 40% compared to the previous year.May 10, 2024

I mentioned "hoops" -
When we came over back in 2014 it was a lot easier - nevertheless to smooth the way we used a company in Budapest, Helpers Hungary. They were very good, albeit very expensive (but we thought it worth the expense). Obviously other agents are around but I have no knowledge of these.

buying a car is not tricky - but buyer beware !!! better to buy from a dealer than private (more legal protection). Assume any used car has been clocked unless otherwise proven and get it inspected. MOTs don't mean much as it is easier to 'buy' one here than in the UK.
I would suggest coming here for a bit to loook-see. 90 days in any 180 as a 'tourist' or do it officially for one year as a digital nomad which entitles you to work here whilst you look around to select your area before you make the move of a lifetime.
Hungarian will eventually be needed and can be difficult to learn if you are not language orientated.
200k will be enough to buy something reasonable with change to spare (depending upon the area you choose, Budapest could use most/all of the budget but I wouldn't want to live there).

Thank you Peter ,
My wife and I will come out next spring for a while .
I fully understand the difficulties in learning Hungarian , but I’ll try my hardest to learn.
yes , I’ll buy from a reputable dealer now .

Some of us less agricultural types like living in Budapest (that's an old joke by the way!).
However, as Peter says, Budapest property prices will easily suck up your budget, depending of course on what accommodation you require - likely in the region of HUF 1.5 million per square metre.

Foreigners are not allowed to buy agricultural land and Hungarians need to be qualified either by time served in agriculture or an agricultural qualification to buy land (up to 1 ha allowed without qualification). For today's regs. I am qualified by time served but when we came here (1995) the rules were different and I came in to Hungary with my Hungarian wife and family and on the basis of settlement I could buy land. (And I am now a dual citizen UK/HU)
