Sorry, I know this isn't related to anything Hungarian, apart from the nationality of the killer cat I brought one of our feline friends over to what he must deem to be cat heaven! In his short time here, he has decimated the water vole population and seriously dented the number of baby bunnies - NOT nice seeing as he brings them through the cat flap.
He has now discovered our hedge which has a coaltit and two chaffinch nests, all with babies ready to fledge in about 6-7 days times. Having already started to empty the nests, I've kept him locked up[ in the conservatory for the past two days but I can't do so for another week - allergies, cat going crazy etc.

Any suggestions? He heads for the hedge the minute he is free and he will empty the nests as soon as he is let out. I know the laws of nature are at times cruel but I'm wondering if moving the nests would work or would the mother desert them

Did you mean feline friends rather than canine? Or is it a dog disguised as a cat?
You could always give it alcohol before letting it out. It would never find the nests then

that might actually work, it could even go viral on youtube! I've let it out and it's driving me mad.... In the middle of a phone call I was chasing the cat away from the bush with a water spray - thank goodness it wasn't a video call. I need a long term solution

Wouldn't surprise me, he sure gets about - you never know where he'll pop up... pretty determind when he sets his mind to it

I'm used to fending off cats, we've had plenty since we've been here :P
Ours seems to have stopped catching moles and moved onto other stuff again. There was a blood stain on the porch floor this morning but no body and half a dead rat the other day :/
I don't want to discourage him, only from catching the lizards and snakes, I quite like those

Do you know anyone who's suffering from a rat infestation or similar? You could lend them the cat. It would be a nice little holiday for him - he'd be doing something he enjoys and it would be doing someone else a favour.

Yeah, I know cats don't take too well to being lent out - it's a good idea in theory but probably not in practice.

It's a simple choice, you either have wildlife or cats, you can't have both.

Good idea but as he has rabbits in abundance, the grounds are full of them, he would likely turn his nose up at rats! Right now he just seems to be determined to get these babies

Mine was never a hunter, too lazy, yet now he brings me half eaten rabbits on a daily basis - not nice if you have a weak stomach, I scream for the kids

I love my old pusscat. We had two.

Is this an ex feral cat? Has he been neutered?

There is not much you can do other than have him put down to save the wildlife or keep him indoors.

Or you may find a vet to give him a tranq. It has been known.

I'm afraid BEV is right ... unlike dogs, cat are untrainable so its a choice of putting up with his bad habit or having him PTS.

My cat often brings back dead birds, mole, voles etc which she leaves on the doorstep. I've found though if she has cat food always available for her, the amount of wildlife she kills tends to decrease. Her hunting is also seasonable .. in winter when all the birds have disappeared and small animals have hibernated the killing stops! Funnily enough, during the 6 months we spent in England last year she gave up hunting completely, but started again as soon as we got back to Hungary!
