Northern Hungary
There don't seem to be so many ex pats living near me. Not that I want to socialise exclusively with ex pats but it would be nice to meet a few, especially any who happen to play music!
Feel free to make contact if you're in the Vác area or not too far away.
I have also just started a FB group called Northern Hungary expats.

Re: Northern Hungary
Hi, we are considering northern Hungary as one of our options as a location to move to. We have been looking for a small town, lake tiza, Eger direction.
Can you tell me what the transport links are like or some towns close to a train station. Any local estate agents that you could recommend?
Thank you,
Dee & John

Re: Northern Hungary
Hi I'm afraid I don't really know that area. Where we are, near Vác, travel links are very good with regular trains to Budapest. Road connections are also good. Eger is a tourist destination so I imagine it's well served.
Try these estate agents:
Dunakanyar - Ildikó Ingatlan Iroda bemutatkozás
ingatlan.com - A legtöbb ingatlan egy helyen.
Good luck.

When we looked at an ex hunting lodge near Tiza lake, we were warned that anti mosquito measures are very limited compared to the more popular Balaton.
Worth considering if like most UK residents you never consider the little mites a real pest.

Although we are a little higher in altitude than down by the Danube, we still get the mozzies but they fly over and spray every so often. We have screens on all windows and doors. Certainly worth considering.

Re: Northern Hungary
Greetings from the vicinity of Hévíz!
Here also a few days ago was a spraying against mosquitoes (at least I hope no chemtrail ... ) and I think everywhere in Hungary mosquito screens are a good idea ....
Also there is a fluid which contains some fungus that kills the larvae - used it in Germany too on "standing water", forgot the name though, we don't have water storage (yet ...) here for the garden.

Well that's not something we had even thought about. Very much in the deciding stage but need to get a move on.

Yes, mosquitoes can make life difficult at times, especially if you want to grow veg. It gets too hot to do much in the middle of the day so everyone is tending their veg patches either early in the morning or late in the afternoon, both times of peak mosquito activity!
Some areas also get deer flies and horse flies. Most of my T shirts now have small holes in the shoulder areas where the deer flies have bitten through prior to biting me!

I live in a small village in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen (North Eastern Hungary) about 20 miles from Encs and 50 from Miskolc. No mosquitos here and very few ticks if you have dogs to think about. House prices are cheap in this region and you can find houses in need of renovation with half an acre of land from about £3000 in villages like mine.
Budapest is easily accessible being an hour and a half by car or there's the express train which runs every 2 hours from Encs to Keleti. I normally go by train as I'm an OAP and qualify for free train and bus travel throughout Hungary.
If you're interested in knowing more about the region feel free to contact me.

Re: Northern Hungary
We have a house in the north 20 mins drive from Eger. Mainline station is Füzesabony. That is 15 mins by train from Eger, then 1.5 hours to Budapest. We usually drive directly to Füzesabony though, rather than change trains.

We are an interesting combination cos I am Irish, my husband is English & we currently live in Wales. Guess I will have to get used to waiting at the other side of the customs fence for him ...lol

Re: Northern Hungary
We really can't decide , should we go North or Balaton way. Am sure both will be perfect for what we want, trying to choose is more difficult that we thought. Looks like property prices do vary but have seen some good ( or on the face of it good) ones in both areas. How do we choose, distance for Budapest is roughly the same, climate seems roughly the same, what's the major differences?

Re: Northern Hungary
Balaton is full of foreigners of the non Hungarian type!
And only open in the summer months.
Ok that is slightly tongue in check, you could split the difference and live in the middle on the big boring flat bit, great for bikes.
