Moving house! Now, boxes...... And vans?
We have been offered a Tanya at a good deal and we are moving down there from Budapest in August. Hopefully we will then develop the bees etc into a nice viable business and all will be well.
Unless of course after a Brexit we all get kicked out.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew if a reliable company sells packages of boxes for house moving? I did use one company in the UK to supply them in bulk for the original move over but the postage would get silly to Hungary I am sure.
Could do with a decent size van to rent too, not many options however! Or so it seems.
We are on a seriously minimal budget though. Too many disasters over the last year and a lot of uncertainty and a slightly surprising new baby has wiped out the old savings and a poor year from the honey to compound matters.
Though it will be nice to get into a proper sized house again.

Cheapest option - if you have a tow bar - would be to rent a trailer. Otherwise if there is a flea market near you then a chat with one of the traders who usually have large white vans, you might find one of them willing to do a 'taxi' run with his van. typical price for a car recovery truck s 120 HUF/km so expect this sort of price. A search on google teherautó bérlés shows several options one I looked at was 12000HUF/day

Don't know where you are or where you are going, but since you are having a bad year and I am having a disgustingly happy one (Yin and Yang) I have a 4x4 pickup with tow bar and if it makes sense I can off to help since I am happy but also permanently bored, sorry that should read retired!

They don't seem to do van hire much in Hungary although it is possible to hire a Transit size minibus, which might work if you were just shifting loads of stuff packed in clean cardboard boxes. My neighbours have a couple of builders type pickup trucks and I have employed them to shift a motorbike for me so Peters suggestion is probably the sort of thing I would do. I would happily lend you my 3.5 tonne LDV Convoy but I've still not found an interpreter willing to help get it registered on Hungarian plates.

We have a van booked for 10 days from Sixt at their Budapest Vaci Ut depot. Price is a reasonable(I think) £400.
I can post again at the end of July on our experience with the hire.

Hi, I think we can source a decent van through my Sister-in-law's partner so hopefully that will be ok.
I only did my licence in 2010 after a big rule change so I can't tow a trailer! We're just beside Budapest (Ecser) and are going to a village about half an hour away from Kecskemet so only an hour and a half away or so from Budapest. So a couple of days would do it. The problem is that we have furniture to move so our old VW is too small and dirty!
It's just cardboard boxes we need to find now. Is there nowhere to buy them in bulk?

As far as I now you can tow a trailer with a B category licence. It is just that you are limited to a max of 3.5 ton all up weight, that is car and trailer gross weight. most trailers that you hire are 500kg gross weight. That fits most cars - read your log book to find out max towable weight for your car. also 500kg don't need brakes so they are cheaper trailers.

Why not send a PM to Clive Bradbury who was asking about rubbish disposal? Otherwise you can get cardboard boxes in OBI. When I moved from UK I got my boxes from someone on Freecycle who had just moved themselves.

Hi Jetsam,
I'm back in Hungary early July - I'll take a look at my vast collection of packaging to see if I have anything suitable and let you know. Mostly flatpack type packaging, though.
I have also got lots of travel bags - the soft type, but with wheels - if they are any use. It's cheaper to take hold luggage one way on a flight and leave it in Hungary as the cost of the bag is less than the cost to fly back to the UK with it! So we have about six bags if you need them.
If it is any use to you, I am also in country first two weeks of August.
