Well, sadly I still have 31 or so years to wait!!

Would this only affect people who are claiming their pensions now or in the future too?

My understanding is that if you are resident in an EU country before 31st December 2020 you should get uprated UK state pension even if you get it after that date. But I'm unsure for those with a much longer wait like yourself. I may be wrong!

What the announcement said is
Quote
If you are living in the EU, EEA or Switzerland by 31 December 2020 you will get your UK State Pension uprated every year for as long as you continue to live there. This will happen even if you start claiming your pension on or after 1 January 2021 End quote

There is no time limit so according to this if you are entitled to a UK state pension and you are resident in the EU by the end of this year it will be uprated. There are also rules about contributions to other EU state pensions - but you would have to look into these to see how they apply.

Of course 31 years is enough time for the rules to be changed several times over so what the rules might be then is anyone's guess.

By the time Jetsam gets within striking distance the qualifying age would have gone back, by several years!

My UK state pension retirement age is 66.5 . Same as my wife but I'm unsure if she will get the maximum as she's worked part time for past 15 years. She's been in UK for atleast 30 years.

Might be worth getting a forecast from HMRC.

Yes, I agree. I have told my wife she needs to look into this but it falls on deaf ears. Quite ironic because we're both deaf! Ha ha ha.

Get a forecast, if the pension falls short of the maximum you can make voluntary contributions to make up the difference. T&Cs apply so you have to read the small print and you will also need to decide if the cost is worth the benefit. But without the forecast as a starting point you will never know. You can do it online here

Well, I now work for a Multinational here and so am getting my Hungarian pension paid into at quite a nice rate and legally too. Career guy. I do apologise for my failure at the old dream life eh.

Once back in some sort of financial order I would look to get up a few extra payments into NI.

Don't worry about the need to get a real job. Most of the small farmers I know need to supplement their agricultural efforts with another job. We (that is SWMBO) did translation and interpreting for years along with conferences and alike to supplement agriculture - and that is on a farm of 30ha.

Just keep the bees for weekends and evenings to keep the sanity.
