Default Lake balaton Transport

Hi can anyone tell me if it is possible to travel around the lake on public transport, especially on Saturday or Sunday?

Am thinking about getting a train to one of the larger towns & seeing if it possible .

There is a railway line running along the south shore of the lake but I can't find a map or any information online about using it for resort hopping or whatever.

Trains run both sides of the lake and there are weekend services. There is a map at Travelling by train from Budapest to Lake Balaton

There is nothing that goes 'around' the lake. Public transport in Hungary is arranged to coincide with work and school times so weekends there are fewer services. Journeys have to be planned using the timetables which can be found at http://menetrendek.hu/ where you can put in your various criteria (starting place, destination, times, day etc.) This website will give options integrated between bus and train as appropriate and you know what is offered by the icon at the top left of each journey listed. Unfortunately there is no English language option.

Dont forget to look for the wording - 1 átszállás or 2 átszállás - for example, on the http://menetrendek.hu/ route/map results, which mean 1 and 2 transfers respectively. Clicking on the word átszállás will reveal the transfer stops/changeovers.

There is the official site of the railway - available in English.
It gives you time and cost for the trains.

MV-START :: ELVIRA - belfldi vasti utastjkoztats

You can't put in the sametown twice, so just for fun I loked at Budapest - keszthely - Veszprém which takes you around the Balaton:
