Rural,

Apologies for making a comment that is open to misinterpretation. The phrase "a quick look at it on my behalf", was meant to indicate that it was no more than a friendly act on your part and your name was mentioned as this seemed more courteous than just saying someone. Anyhow apologies again for my badly worded comment and thanks for your help on that and other occasions. I am still looking forward to catching up with you on my next visit to Hungary.

Gregg,

No need to be nervous. A house visiting tour arranged by GLM is a good way to get a first idea of what Hungarian villages are like. Have a list of questions
ready about things you would like to know about the villages you visit. If you find a house you like, just take the normal precautions and get some advice on the location and house before committing yourself to anything or parting with any money. You can start a new thread for advice on this forum at that stage. If you do not like the look of any of the GLM offerings when you see the actual properties, you will at least have had an easy introduction to Hungary and you will be a better prepared to investigate other possibilities.

If you look through the old threads on this forum, you will find that GLM seem to receive as many positive comments as negative comments. Possibly the price example I previously posted is just an error on their website and probably any property agent will have a mixture of happy and unhappy customers. GLM have certainly been responsible for finding more houses for UK residents in the areas you are considering than any other agency and have several positive mentions.

A previous post which stated I have no personal experience of GLM is not quite right. Although I have not purchased a property using this company, my first trip to Hungary a couple of years ago, was organised by an associate of GLM and was going to be the subject of my third post on this thread. I spent three days with one of their agents, touring a fairly wide area of Hungary and visiting about 15 different houses in 15 different villages.

As there are supposed to be several hundred people who have purchased property in Hungary through GLM it is surprising there are not more comments. As people with negative comments are generally more likely to make their views known than those with positive comments it seems there cannot be many people who are not happy with the service they received from GLM.

Good luck and happy Hungarian house hunting.

Although I'm not yet in Hungary I'm in the same boat as you Digger with a Hungarian wife. Where we plan to settle is easy ..... in her family's village in Malyi. When the right time comes we're off but sad to say we doubt our dogs will be around by then because we know they would love it over there barking their heads off! Health care is high on my list too and I'm confident we will get this sorted out and with my wife's sister and family as well as other friends living there we could always ask them for help. We already have a network of friends in that area as well as around the country via my wife's time living in Budapest before she moved to UK some 20 years ago.

I am sorry, but having read your previous posts on the subject, it seems to me that you are trying to provoke a reaction. Perhaps it serves well on Google rankings to keep this thread at the top of the list? I note that it has been mentioned that you are related to people who active in the Hungarian property market?

As for the quoted comment, a lot of people don't want to admit that they might have been sold a property for more than it was worth. Perhaps some people just want to get on with their lives and forget any poor service they have experienced. Being duped can actually be very hurtful, its not always just about the money. Ignorance is bliss and all that.

Hungary is a wonderful country, but its not for everyone. It makes me sick to the back teeth to know that there are so many sharks out there in the Hungarian property market selling property to unsuspecting Brits, telling them stuff about Hungary which has no basis in reality.:frown:

I had to clarify the point seeing as one of your daughters partners made a veiled threat to me on this very point, this was during the conversation when I was also told that she was trying to put me out of business because I was in her market place. Despite the fact that she and her husband have newly arrived on the boat from Bulgaria, whereas I have been helping stop people from getting ripped off or buying in the wrong villages for quite some time now. In fact, that was how you initially made contact.

Your comments about GLM were quite clear, moreso the fact that you pointed out the discrepancy in their pricing structure. Your latest reply only serves to show there is more to this. A complete U turn, forum readers aren't stupid and forum users have already contacted me this morning to ask what is going on with this thread. If you and your family want to play games, please do not do it on this forum and at least I have my answer as to whether my faith in you was misguided.

This is one of those threads that just stinks to high heaven and yes, his daughter has recently started up a property company. The hypocrisy is that when I pointed out to a forum poster, that the same properties on my site were on Cara's site but priced differently, I'm assuming it passed down the line somehow and it wasn't received very well and a bunch of lies were told to my web host in an attempt to have my business taken offline.
It's much more involved but I won't go into it on here as the forum should be about helping each and it leaves a nasty taste.

I remember a couple of years ago posting that the market was different here and that apart from 2 or 3 larger companies (one British owned!!) who had a tendency to overprice or offer shoddy after sales services, there wasn't the cut throat mentally or underhanded practices that were regularly seen in Bulgaria (not exclusively Bulgaria). Sadly, that appears to be changing and all you can hope for is that when people do put their neck on the line to speak out against such practices, fully aware that there might be fallout in the "real world" from it, that people listen and take heed.

What more can you do? Horse, water, lead......

GLM estate agents

Been over to Hungary, loved the look of the countryside met the agents GLM hungarian properties but didn't buy.....found them to be very false and two faced. As soon as we said we were not going to buy this time round their attitude totally changed, fair to say we will not be using this company to buy in Hungary, if we do at all.......Pitty!!!

Re: GLM estate agents

There have been lots of previous threads re this company before I believe - have a search on the forum and you will find other agents recommended by forum users.

Good Luck.

Don't be put off - there are good and bad estate agents in every market. There are good ones near the Balaton - look through the Hungary threads.

Re: GLM estate agents

Yes, they are not all like that but you do have to be circumspect with agents as you would in any country. I bought my place through an agent but I was fortunate that I had an interpreter with me who enabled me to ask questions direct with the seller. If you have help with the language barrier you can avoid agents completely and look for properties with hand made "Elado" signs.
