EHIC hassle
#1
I noticed that my EHIC was due to expire in a few days, and because of my impending trip back to England, I decided to renew it last Friday. The last time I did this it was an easy procedure and I didn't need my wife to translate. Not this time. I filled in the form, handed it to the woman at the desk and she asked me if I worked, I replied that I don't so she tried to explain that I must now either go to NAV or log into my clientgate+ and return with an official print out proving that my NI contributions are up to date. I hurried round to the NAV office but missed its opening hours by 10 minutes. I tried to get the information from my clientgate+ account in the afternoon but it was a nightmare so had to return to NAV the next day. I got the print out and headed off to get my new EHIC card, only to be told that it's only valid for 6 months and I will now have to renew it every 6 months as I'm not working. I presume that once I reach retirement age I won't need to keep renewing it so often. Just a warning for anyone else wanting to renew their EHIC.
