Default Does anyone know what this is ?

Curiosity has got the better of me ! I've seen quite a few of these poles / posts dotted around in rural areas and have no idea what they are ... Google is no help either ! I thought they might be something to do with marking water pipelines underground but that wouldn't explain what appears to be an electronics box at the base of the post ...

They mark the passage of the underground gas pipeline. Sometimes they have the number of the pipeline and sometimes plain. You also get vents provided at certain points which don't have the flags atop and sometimes vents at flag points (which would be an additional pipe)
PS Gas is marked yellow and water marked blue.
