Coronavirus
Hello, I for one at the moment till the scare is over completely, will not be buying Chinese takeaways eg from Tesco franchise. I am aware that Chinese staff do go back to China to visit family. Also clothing shops that have Chinese staff. This is purely on medical grounds, the choice is yours.

Re: Coronavirus
Yeah, that's a good idea, I never really thought about it until now.
I will also boycott take away food but I won't worry about buying clothes and other goods made by 12 year old children and prisoners working as forced labourers because they are not allowed outside so won't catch anything. . |
Re: Coronavirus
These type illnesses know NO boundaries. I would not worry about just TESCO Chinese takeaways or products. I would be more concerned about ANYONE that has recently done air travel or public transportation. This illness knows no racial boundaries. ANYONE can become sick if exposed to them. Take common sense steps to avoid large crowds and if you get sick don't hesitate to seek medical treatment.
|
Re: Coronavirus
I now face a moral dilemma. I regularly deliver food from several Chinese restaurants. Should I continue to deliver Godzilla Bat Roll in the knowledge that it may have been sneezed upon?
|
Re: Coronavirus
May I suggest crossing the street when you see a Chinaman approaching?

Now I just have to share a bad, bad joke I read:
The only known way to fight that virus is drinking one or two Corona beers with your meal! Actually in every country thousands of people die every year from the common flu ... |

Re: Coronavirus
An ex-neighbour of my parents in law went to work in China. He fell in love with a chinese lady and dumped his Hungarian wife. I suspect at this point in time he's probably wondering if he can come back to Hungary and bring his chinese partner. I would expect the Hungarian government's answer would be NO!
Before I retired I worked with a Chinese guy and before him a Chinese lady. I think they are very worried for their families back home. I also had a colleague in another finance department from Hong Kong and she has been resident in the UK since before .Hong Kong was handed back to China. It must be a very difficult time for them. |

Re: Coronavirus
In my post above I mentioned a colleague from Hong Kong. She once came into work wearing a dust mask. I felt quite offended. I thought what the hell is she thinking. But it turned out she fell off her bike and grazed her face and she felt so embarassed she thought wearing the dust mask would cover up her grazed face!

Wolfi - you've probably enraged the whole Hungarian nation! They swear by drinking a shot of palinka every morning keeps you healthy.
Often they have more - even in Keszthely we passed a sörözö this morning by 9 o'clock on our way to the Lidl with several guys standing outside drinking and smoking ... |

Re: Coronavirus
Yeah, I remember my shock when I came to HévÃz the first morning and saw that bar in the cellar of a hotel besides that famous locomotive - just across from OTP.
It had a sign "open from 7". We once went there in the afternoon, it was full of railway stuff ... |

Re: Coronavirus
Yes, stuff!
Like many other hotels in HévÃz this hotel had been a "workers place", in this case for railway workers, so the bar in the cellar was filled with railway souvenirs and pictures - quite nice for a glass of wine or a beer or two. The only problem now is the "zero tolerance" policy so we don't usually go out any more - maybe the reduced contact with others will also reduce the danger of getting infected with the virus. Even more OT: In my German hometown a lab company connected to the university is already working on some treatment for the latest Corona virus: https://www.curevac.com/news/curevac...rus-ncov-2019# |

It had a sign "open from 7". We later took over one of the bars but didn't open until lunchtime as the drinking culture has now changed and fewer people drink in the local pub(s). |

About Hungary - Quarantined patients are in "good health"
Quarantined patients are in "good health"The police and the National Ambulance Service (OMSZ) are checking travelers entering Hungary for coronavirus at six major border crossings across the country. |
Re: Coronavirus
On the other hand someone went onto social media with the fake news that Hungary had the coronavirus and that several hundred people had already been infected and it was spreading.
The police traced them down and they are being prosecuted. I'm not sure of the exact law but it is on the lines of actions likely to result in public panic. Anyway the authorities are taking a very dim view of the prank. Apparently it was done to get more clicks/likes/shares or whatever social media does. (Hungary has no confirmed cases yet) |

Re: Coronavirus
2 cases now confirmed in Hungary.
From my understanding, 2 Iranian students have returned from visiting Iran and have tested positive. One is studying in Győr, the other in Budapest but they are both being treated in BP. |
Re: Coronavirus
As I understand it the 2 Hungarians are the wife and girl friend of the 2 Iranians and they are the 2 infected Hungarians not the 2 Iranian students (who went voluntarily for testing as one of them felt ill, both having just returned from family visits to Iran) .
|
Re: Coronavirus
There were also 3 suspected cases in the hospital but I found out today from one of the pharmacists that they all tested negative.

Re: Coronavirus
On this topic, I received an email from my agent here (Hungary) that sorts my Hungary related matters for me, that our local mayor (ess) or whatever, had been in contact with her. She obviously knows that I arrived in Hungary very recently but wants to know the route I took to get here and by what means. I did supply the details.
The mayor and her family drive past my place a few times a day to get to each others houses and would have seen my van (yes a van - dont ask) in the drive! She also wants me to go to the local (next village) to have the Covid 19 blood test and wants me to supply her with a certificate of same!!!!!! Anyone know if the mayor (ess) request is a legal one? Whilst I totally accept that the mayor (ess) is intending to look after the welfare of the village, I do have reservations that her request is a legal one. However there may be some or other special emergency laws in place here in Hungary of which I am not aware. Beside a short (to some) or prolonged (to others) wave to some of the locals, I have not been in physical contact or close proximity with anyone here. Whilst there is no doubt the matter is a very serious one, I advised my agent that I would be requiring a very recent covid 19 test certificate of the mayor (ess) as well as her family. Anyone else been instructed to have this blood test upon recent arrival? GBA |
Re: Coronavirus
The government has declared a state of emergency, I suspect not because the situation is dire (yet) but rather that declaring such enables certain powers to be invoked. This evening I heard that schools will be closed, Unis have already shut and the education system top to bottom will be going on line. Victor gave a TV broadcast this evening (with another scheduled for tomorrow) outlining 10 task groups to manage certain aspects of the crisis.- One of the specific things he asked is that children are not sent to grandparents for child minding. - So the state is taking things seriously.
However to your point, is the request for your test legal? I don't know, however from my family, my son was sent on a business trip to Holland 2 weeks ago and returned today. The area in Holland was one with a high number of cases. He has been asked to 'self isolate' for 2 weeks and at the same time his family (2 kids of kindergarten school age and his wife) will also have the same isolation. There is a red notice to be put on the gate informing the public of the situation. So I can quite see where your council / mayor is coming from. Depending upon your circumstances here and for the future good relationships in the village in your place I would either comply with the request for a test or offer to self isolate for 2 weeks. Perhaps ask the mayor to organise a test via the local GP and offer to self isolate in the mean time. Never mind the legalities of the request, the politically correct thing to do and for good future relations would be to comply in the easiest way for you.. |
Re: Coronavirus
Thanks Peter.
I did a period of self isolation a short while ago so I think the blood test is preferable tbh. Just received a message this morning that the mayor says I must NOT go to the local doctors on Monday as she is unsure if they have the test facilities or not. I may have to go to Zalaegerszeg but they will let me know. I think I can see where this is going. |

Re: Coronavirus
"Two Iranian university students have been expelled from Hungary for leaving a hospital where they were ordered to stay in quarantine due to coronavirus, the interior ministry said on Friday.
The two men had repeatedly left their room in St. László Hospital and would refuse to return when they were warned, the statement said, adding that they had behaved aggressively with staff at the hospital." Looks like the State is taking non compliance seriously. |
Re: Coronavirus
It is unlikely that any village surgery will have facilities to do these tests. Our village doctor would take a sample and personally deliver it to the closest test centre. A blood test can be taken by any competent person (nurse, physican). They are likely to require a "Nasopharyngeal Swab" for a PCR test but this can be taken by the same person.
Our village housewife-Mayor has thankfully been replaced at the recent election by someone with a bit more ability to manage village affairs. Of course they can (and do) issue edicts but it should be up to the physican to decide whether or not you should go to a hospital for a sample. Thermal checks are now being made at land borders with Austria and Slovenia. People who have passed through Italy and others suspected of being infected are issued with a red card that must placed prominently at your place of quarantine. this-is-why-it-is-important-to-introduce-and-observe-compulsory-home-quarantine/ |

Re: Coronavirus
In my German hometown they installed testing systems in the "docmobile" that has been around for a few years.
It's parked somewhere and several docs are available to question people and decide on the test. Before you get an appointment you have to call a doc (not go to the office!) who will decide, depending on your history - visits to Italy, contact with a patient etc ... |
