Maybe it is an eastern thing we have two shops in a village with a population of less than 200 and both of them always stock it as do every other shop we go into?

Strange that as I don't know anybody done this way who has managed to buy it so would assume it isn't very common here. Are the local dishes typically Hungarian or do they have other influences?

I had no idea so I asked someone yesterday and apparently it gets used a lot in baking, which is something that I don't do, but also in batter for deep fried meat to keep it' s crunch... Which is incidentally one of the main ways I use it :)

Do you mean a bogrács? There is a fishing lake just outside my village and they have a picnic area with a couple of fireplaces like that. In other countries they would build a barbecue.

How stupid of me to get the spelling wrong. Thought I checked it on Google before I typed it!

The place is actually at my wife's parents property in Malyi. My father-in-law built the fireplace.

I had two extra helpings and another the next day before we flew home. I agree nothing beats cooking outdoors ..... very relaxing, creates a great social occasion and nobody is tripping over each other inside the house!

One thing I'd like to know is where can I get the metal bit which holds up the bogracs pot? Either in Hungary or the UK so I can build one here in UK!

We can by them at pretty much any roadside stall out here in the east that sell the pot (there are loads of them on all motorway 'alternative' roads) and also in most hardware stores :)

The stalls in Balatonelle, or it might be the next village - the one with the little market of wooden stalls. You can also pick them up in the likes of Obi and any hardware store.

Or like me, things are never there when you're looking for them but in abundance when you aren't;)

I think some of you already seen this about the Hairy Bikers travelling through Slavkia, Hungary and Romania and sampling their cooking/cuisine, langos and Tokaj wine.
