Building a small wine cellar - how much should you pay?
I was at my Hungarian mate's place on Sunday, out in the countryside near Velence To. We've known each other for 20 years and I already knew the answer but I got him to remind me: how much did you pay to get that wine cellar built? Answer: about £1000 but that was 20 years ago, so these days £2000.
What is it? A wine cellar in the garden, it goes down 17 steps, so about 3.5m deep. Top temperature was 30C+, cellar temperature was a constant 13C. I don't think it goes much colder in the winter. I guess dimensions are of a small box room, enough to store perhaps 12 barrels of wine, not that huge.
How did he get it made? Digger took out the first bit of earth as far as it could, then it was dug by hand down to 3.5m. It's a mixture of brick & concrete construction, eg the steps are concrete, the walls are brick.
Made me quite envious. I don't exactly need a wine cellar in the garden but for that money it would be quite neat to have just to go somewhere cool when it's 35C!.

About £1000 20 years ago won't translate to 2K now........in fact I would be surprised if the materials could be got for that. And then you have to find a builder who is not tied up building houses for those who have just got the 10M huf +10M huf families grant.
As a note on building costs, when we came here 24 years ago building materials were cheap and nothing was available (yes empty shops!) now everything is available and nothing is cheap.
