Any pharmacy will sell them, they are very inexpensive - just ask at the counter.

What do you define as very inexpensive? For the last few weeks I've been taking some Zinc + vitamin C capsules I got in Mullers but I have now read that you need 60 mg a day to be effective against mozzies and these are only 5 mg. I asked at the pharmacy in Tescos today and they wanted 1400 Ft for 100 tablets of 15 mg zinc. I would still need to take 4 a day but at least I would not be overdosing on vitamin C!

I accumulated 11 bites in 2 days last week from mowing the garden.I have antihistamine cream and tablets from the chemist (over the counter) and they work well.
I believe you cannot overdose on vitamin "C", you wee the excess out and on average you only need up to 500mg/day and no you won't turn orange

I got our Zinc which includes Vit C, from Healthspan online. They will deliver to Hungary but there is a cost, however, if you can them delivered to an address in UK and them someone brings them out postage is free.

I started taking 30mg daily in Feb, and upped it to 60mg daily in April. So far I have had a few bites but I have not reacted as badly as I normally do.

Thanks Richard. I will try the antihistamine cream. I have not dared attempt any strimming yet as the mosquitoes could distract me and cause an accident. I'm wondering about getting a bee keepers hood to protect my face. For strimming I might try my welding gauntlets as they can bite you through normal gardening gloves (guess how I know?).

This is one of the places I buy our vitamins, amino acids etc, they have 100mg or 30mg though postage is about 1000ft so worth stocking up on other items at the same time.
For antihistamines, ask for Zirtec or Cetrizene at the chemist.

My wife's parents just put out a couple of saucers with vanilla sugar. Sees to work although I've still been bitten probably because I was sitting too far away from it!

I tried the vanilla sugar today but not sure if it helped at all. Should it be dry or do you have to wet it? I've just read that bounce fabric softener sheets can also help but I don't know if they sell those here.

Should really be pure vanilla extra, not the cheaper ones as it's the vanilla that will repel them, sugar attracts them.
Have you used the citronella, eucalyptus mix? It does work, if sitting outdoors, burn some in an incense burner - much stringer than the citronella candles you can buy.

No, I did look in Mullers for stuff like that but could not find it. I suppose the small herbal shops in the arcades might have it. I know you said you can buy essential oils online but I would prefer to just go in a shop. I did see things like tea tree moisturising cream and shower gel etc but didn't know if they would work. I was going to look on the market but it was closed the last time I went.

My wife said she thinks there's only one variety or quality of vanilla sugar. It does work for us.

If you have water butts around your property you are probably attracting more of them because they breed in water butts. My father-in-law puts a little oil (assume cooking oil) in them. I think it starves the mozzies getting any oxygen. Maybe someone else here would know a bit more about this.

The larva breath through a small breathing tube/siphon, the end of this tube extends just above the water level, adding oil creates a layer which floats on the water and covers the end of the siphon thus starving them of oxygen and effectively drowning them with oil. It's effective, we did it on the reed bed two years ago.
