Thanks Wolfi. I think I will try to contact a few used car dealers to see if they can help. I have previously approached repair garages with a view to doing a pre-MoT and any modifications for Hungarian requirements.

The 'P' plate costs HUF 38,000, the necessary insurance is HUF 200,000 and the admin fee is HUF 16,000 so all in all a fairly expensive business for a private individual. Possibly easier /cheaper for a company.

The 'P' plate is the trade plate so if you are buying and selling cars it's the way you can buy a car and drive it away. The alternative being a car transporter, which would be a pain.

I assume the P plate is for temporary use and cannot stay on a vehicle indefinitely. This seems to be a non starter. One other way is to buy a new lhd in the UK which we did. This gave us 3 years without having to worry about the MOT and tax and insurance can be done on line. We did register it here when it was 3 years old.

Yes, I don't think I'm in the market for a new car! I was thinking more like 10-12 years old. In any case, as far as I understand it, new cars are pretty much the same price here as in the uk, aren't they?

When I asked about trade plates I was not thinking in terms of obtaining a set of them as I assumed you would have to be in the trade to qualify for them. I was just thinking of them as a possibly cheaper way of getting a vehicle transported than using a breakdown recovery service. In effect you would be employing a driver rather than hiring a towtruck plus driver. I think years ago in UK these car delivery drivers mostly did it on a freelance basis, presumably operating though agencies. As soon as the vehicle has its new plates it can be insured and driven normally.
