Default Why Not Rent ?

I am genuinely puzzled. Why do so many Brits (especially English) become obsessed with BUYING properties - even in foreign jurisdictions where ownership is always in doubt ? Why not just rent ?

Because 10 years ago, the problems were not known - we all wanted a piece of what we thought was paradise. A place for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. We certainly have had our monies worth out of our apartment.
Renting for five months will be expensive, because I am used to the best, therefore will not be spending so long in Goa if I ever sell.

Good point. Because Thatcher made us all believe that owning property was the best way...

Also you can't make a home of rented property in the same way or make any additions. And then there is the problem of one's personal stuff if the owner wants to rent out when you are not there.

I rented in Goa for about 25 years; it was ok, because my landlord lived in Pakistan and could only get visas for a few weeks every now and then. I took care of the place and paid him when he could get into the country.

I like owning property; I like to build and improve, knowing I'm adding to my own wealth instead of someone else's. Renting suits many people, but not everyone.

The house in Goa had no well; after both neighbors cut me off [reneging on agreements made and money paid], and the public supply failed [I knew it would only work for a few years], I had a real problem. I was unwilling to front 3 years rent for the well. As there was no road, it would involve a lot of expense.
I was just renting, so I was able to walk away from all the grief; and my home.
But if I'd bought he place back in 1984, I would have come out way ahead.

How about one of these? Cheaper than renting.

I built a camper in India; it was bigger though. Much bigger.

2.15 meters wide, 3 high, 7 meters long, 7 tons, 400 liters fresh water, 450 diesel, hot and cold running water, air-con, water-cooled diesel generator, heating...
I had the body fabricated in Goa on a new Swaraj-Mazda chassis.
Yes, you can just live on the beach; and if it gets too loud or boring, just go to another.
I enjoyed driving it through India, but I'm probably rare in that way.
I sold it recently; with great reluctance.

Agreed. You're always restricted with what you can do to it. And what happens if the landlord wants to sell the place? You have to move on, even if you don't want to.

That was a dream of ours many years ago, before we bought the apartment.

There are some companies in Mumbai that make them, but I haven't had a look at any of them in person. From what I've seen online, they have nice finishes but seem very vague about the technical stuff, which I find vitally important in a vehicle like that.
Most are built for Bollywood types to use on location; they would have separate trucks for generators, water, and catering for everyone.
In India, the person who could own something like this would be unlikely to do his own driving or cooking.
It seemed to be a bit of a culture shock for a lot of locals;
"But who drives it?"
"I drive it."
"You drive it YOURSELF? But you are the owner! So who is your cleaner?"

Ready to fly out to Goa - had decided to enjoy this holiday, then have another season from November, on my own to see how things went. Property is not on the market but had a phone call from Goa this afternoon with an excellent offer for the apartment far more than anybody else has achieved
Do I sell, or do I stay - decisions, decisions, decisions?

Sell.
I've just finished selling the last of my things in Goa.
My best friends have sold their 2 businesses, cars, motorcycles, and all household goods.
There are many people I'll miss; but it was time.
Sell it all and go somewhere else if you ask me.
