I think ours is called Big Boss, it's an under the sink system with a small tap providing the water. We got ours from Elisha Enterprises in Calangute, they aren't the cheapest but after sales is good. I can't remember the cost as we bought a few items at the same time.

There are a number of good makes but the important thing is that you should get a reverse osmosis system and have it serviced regularly. Not cheap but a lot cheaper than bottled water after a few months.

I use Brita filters in the US.

Haven't seen these around here but it seems like they have a tie up with Usha:

I'll bet they are not as good as the reverse osmosis kits but they are so damn convenient and easy to use.

in pure water filtration system should include pure water filters ro (reverse osmosis), It includes many processes starting from the column sand filter, carbon filter, water softener column, then through the filter 5 micron, 1micron, then through water filters ro, super core 0.2 micron filter and then through a UV-ozone to remove bacteria and to disinfect

most "filters" from the west [ie, Britta] are activated charcoal. they're good for removing chemicals and chlorine, but don't do a thing for the pathogens we usually worry about.
reverse osmosis is good stuff, but possibly overkill.
There are many 3-way filters available in India, with have fine particle, charcoal, and finally UV sterilization.
Both of these two require power to work, and regular maintenance. Unless you're quite handy you'll have to rely on some kid coming in.
Like the one who just disconnected the warning light instead of repairing my UV tube transformer while I was away.
Presuming they're operating as designed, they work well and make water safe to drink.

We have had our purifier for about 10 years. It was made by Eureka Forbes and I have a service contract with them which is renewed for 3 years at a time and works out at about 1200 rupees a year. For that they come out very quickly when called and carry out a service (twice a year) or repair (whenever needed) and it includes all replacement parts.
