UK Government Response to Petition
Thank you for your e-petition.
The Government has raised our concerns over the problems encountered by British owners of property in Goa, with the Indian authorities at both Union and State government level. The Goan Government has said that it introduced the legislation to address the problem of the illegal purchase of land by foreign nationals in the state, not to prevent foreigners buying and owning property in Goa.
We continue to study the legislation recently passed by the Goan State Assembly, but have made clear our view that any new legislation by the Goan authorities should not be retrospective and there should be no question of confiscation of property acquired legally by British nationals. We will continue to pursue this issue with the Indian authorities both in Goa and in Delhi.
