From Goa herald yesterday.
Goa has come to a sorry pass with outbreaks of malaria, and other vector borne deseases which has brought into sharp focus the abysmal state of sanitation and filth in the States both Urban and Rural areas. The steady rise in vector borne diseases particularly Malaria epidemic is threatening to turn Goa into a Pariah State. In fact the state is reeling under a severe Malaria menace which has already claimed many lives and more and more cases are reported daily.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Kittur said he is running the restaurant Jazz House in Candolim for the last ten years. He said these people had ransacked his restaurant in 2006 but when he gave his complaint to the Calangute police station, it was registered as a case of simple mischief.

Kittur has alleged that five people, who are restrained by a court not to enter the property where Jazz House is situated, on September 20, 2007, were involved in assaulting his mother, the land lady Pia Lobo and two other women. My mother, along with the others, had gone to the place to spruce it up for the coming season, he maintained.

The five people entered the place in spite of two armed police guards placed at the entrance, he asserted. The two never budged a single inch when my people and mother were being assaulted, he stated.

Hi Wen,

No unfortunately, booked for 10th November, but have to see if the new arrival and mum are o.k. first. We had booked our ticket in Goa before I knew another monster was on the way. At the moment have two bags packed.

Is the Teama bar open now? Have things started to open up yet?

In other words, every case they have so far examined has been passed on to the D of E as a violation seeking further investigation!

Hi Tony,

Especially when those "immigrants" (FN's) to India would be entirely self financing, non dependant on Indian welfare, pay for their own health care, distribute foreign exchange amongst the local economy, introduce entrepreneurial ideas/methods from the West, improve the amenity by looking after their properties, and providing a cultural mix and hopefully integrating with local society.

Calangute sarpanch voted out amidst high tension
NT News Service

Mapusa, Oct 1 High tension prevailed today at the special meeting that was called to discuss the no confidence motion against the sarpanch of Calangute, Mr Albert Fernandes and his deputy Ms Rupa Chodancar.

Amidst high drama that included an assault on some panch members and trading of charges and counter charges between the two groups, Mr Albert Fernandes and Ms Rupa Chodancar were ousted from office.

Mr Joseph Sequeira , who was the former Calangute sarpanch............These persons then came charging at him and assaulted him with a knife, the complaint says.

Santa Cruz sarpanch ousted
HERALD CORRESPONDENT

MERCES, OCT 1 — The four-month reign of Santa Cruz Sarpanch Helen Lourenco came to an abrupt end, when she was ousted in a no-confidence motion by 6-1 votes on Monday......

.....Outgoing sarpanch Lourenco termed the no-confidence move against her as a political ploy by certain members with vested interests to cover corrupt practices in the panchayat.
She further informed that her objections to issue licences to illegal buildings and where there are CRZ violations contributed in a major way to bring her downfall.......

Editorial from the Herald : Goa Gone

http://www.oheraldo.in/pagedetails.asp?nid=2027&cid=15

.....Goa has gone. There is nothing else to describe the situation in Goa and with the knife attack on panch and ex-sarpanch Joseph Sequeira, it appears that whatever vestiges of decency that were prevalent in Goa have vanished from the window. This attack has laid bare that nothing is sacred in Goa anymore and for that matter there is no respect left in the state......

......It is more than obvious that the Panchayati Raj system is a breeding ground for corruption and deceit and the attack at Calangute only highlights the desperation, people will go to remain in the chair. And this is because of the money involved and much more that is causing all these incidents to occur........

......What type of governance is expected when the leaders themselves break the law and flout all norms of decency?......

what exactly is the role of the panchyat? is there a level of 'reporting' below this body? Obviously there must be loads of money involved for such aggressive moves to have been made.......can not be a matter of honour as no one has shown any for years!!!!.

Goa Rolls Out Red Carpet For Tourists

http://mangalorean.com/news.php?news...adcastid=54480

.....Going by the statistics provided by Sanjith Rodrigues, Managing Director, Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC), nearly 25 per cent of the state's population is either directly or indirectly engaged in tourism activity.....

....Right from taxis to shacks or certain allied business like handicraft, the state's economy is bloated with the tourism revenue. The state brings in huge chunk of foreign revenue to the nation through tourism....

Re: Press quotes

Great article by well respected Goan about the serious issue of Goans losing their cultural identity, as well as their land due to the massive influx of outsiders, both rich and poor.

It's heavily contentious about Goans not being involved in illegal building on other people's land (the usual virtuous Goan story); and haven't Goans been arguing for decades anyway about the historical nature of their "cultural identity"?

Arguably, it has taken an invasion of a mixture of land grabbing out of State "investors" and impoverished homeless immigrants to give a wake up call to "real" Goans that they have a shared history and unique identity.

Somewhere in that mix he omits to mention a disastrous history of duplicitous pocket lining politicians and Government officials who manipulate or disregard the will of the electorate and hold onto power by whatever villainous means, even extending the vote bank to some of the very same people who are visibly despoiling Goa.

Foreign National residents are an insignificant fraction of the population increase he describes, and as Wheatsheaf argues, may even be beneficial to a minor extent in providing checks and balances. Although, unfortunately we have no vote :

http://www.navhindtimes.com/articles...tory_ID=092344

Quotes:

.....During these forty-six years the population of Goa has jumped from 6 lakhs to almost 13 lakhs, out which almost 40 per cent are non-Goans. The analysis of the present situation proves that over 5 lakh outsiders have settled in Goa since liberation. This means that the population of native Goans has increased by about 2.5 lakhs......

....One thing is certain, and that is that non-Goans, elite or labour class, rich or poor, who have come down to Goa and constructed palatial bungalows/houses/huts legally or illegally, have come to Goa to stay.....

.....The bitter truth is that the Goan identity is at risk......

Hi Noni,

I will be in Goa as of end of this week with usual chores of opening up the house, arranging paints and painter, and hunting down that builder who still owes me on some incompleted alterations. :curse:

Thanks for the praise. I have no pretensions to being a journalist; just a pedant with too much time on his hands, though I do manage to get out sometimes (or should that be "out of it"?):wink_smile:, and I do have a genuine interest in Goa.

Cheers

Nearly posted this one myself, but you got there first, and if read properly there is still contridictions.
