My partner< ten year old daughter + I want a year off< from next October + are interested in spending it in Goa> Anybody have any ideas where to start> We want education for our daughter + a safe relaxing + friendly place to live where we can survive on a modest sum> Where can we find info on visas schools health accomodation etc?

Hey David ,

I think you should choose south goa ,preferably areas like benaulim, colva , or seraulim, which is close to Margao the main city in the south .Margao has a number of reputed schools .And it's not happening and hectic like the north ...

The academic year in goa starts in JUNE after the april-may summer break .So you might want to contact a school prior to your arrival in Goa.

Good schools for gals in Margao (Main city in South Goa) are

1. Presentation High School
2. Fatima Convent
3. Manovikas ( Co-ed)

if you're NRI/PIO/OCI no problems - otherwise unless you can somehow get hold of three 'X' visa's you will all have to get out every 180 days.

We've spent the last couple of months negotiating time off from work + now that we've succeeded realise we're running out of time. We certainly fancy South Goa + are coming over on a 2 week package at Easter to check things out. Unfortunately the accomodation is in Arpora, which is not where we would prefer, but it's cheap + we plan to head South once we've found our bearings.

Do you think we could find a school place from October + accomodation nearby? If so, where should we look?

I can't believe you can say Margao is not hectic.
South goa in general is much quieter than the North,but Margao?
I think it is busier than Mapusa and Panjim, and certainly Vasco and Ponda.
Due mainly to the fact it is the hub of South Goa.

I've searched the internet for information on these schools, but can't find anything on how to contact them, or how difficult it is to get a place. Anybody know whether we will be able to find a place for my 11 year old daughter. She is currently at primary school + due to go on to secondary in September.

Living in Himachal Pradesh + Goa

Hi everyone,
My family and I are hoping to spend a year in India from April 09. We have a 10 year old daughter named Rosie-she'll be 11 in August. One of the options we are thinking about is staying in Himachal Pradesh for the first six months, ie April to Sept and then moving onto somewhere warmer (Goa) for the next six months. We visited Goa over Easter, loved it and we were able to visit a number of schools and find out a lot of useful information. Any thoughts on secondary schools in Goa would help.

I am hoping that someone will be able to share some info about Himichal Pradesh, particularly where would be a good place to stay and what the schools are like. So far the only schools I have seen on the web are around Shimla and are boarding schools which isnt something we would want. Also we have heard that shimla is expensive for rented accommodation.

The things we are interested in are:
a good school (not necessarily European or international)
a small town or city somewhere fairly peaceful (but not completely without life)
we enjoy the countryside but also eating out and socialising etc.
an opportunity to meet local people and learn about India. (hope that doesn't sound too worthy.)

Looking forward to hearing from others about their experience of living in Northwestern India and from those with kids in school in HP + Goa

Thanks for your concern AndyD. Schools in Goa looked great to us. She'll receive a different schooling experience which will help her when/if we return to uk. She's a long way off qualifications yet + a rounded experience in life is worth much more than childhood spent cramming for exams. She's more excited than us.
We plan to go in a 6 month visa + go somewhere to renew it at 6 months, as we move from Shimla to Goa - but we're open to suggestions if anyone has any good ideas.

Hi, I must agree with David about the education and the experiences, my three grandchildren are out here (goa) at the moment and have been attending school here for the last year, and they have done brilliantly, they are 8.6.4.years old. the 8year old is learning hindi and came top of the class A+ thats with indian children in it. the 7 year old was struggling in the uk and socially diidnt mix at all, different child now also A+ in her exams 99/100 for maths, and the little one 45/50 the standard is high here and they push the children to excell and with smaller classes every child stands a chance. in the school in the UK there were 32 kids, 2 of which were british and 9 different spoken languages the kids/ teachers dont stand a hope in hell of learning. good luck David to you and your family, if you dont do it you'll never know!!!but dont buy!!!!!!

My god Anslem !! thats very expensive for an apartment, you could stay in a 4 star hotel for that price, bit over the top for india!!!! i have a friend who rents a excellent very large 4 bedroomed bunglow all modern amenities in a beautiful quiet area woth lovely gardens for RS 17.000 a month.

I have lived in Goa for 6 years now put up with many difficult situations but there's one thing i really hate is being riped off, pure greed, and unfortunatley this is now a daily occurrance from going to the market, buying fresh milk and being charged 12rps instead of 10.50rps (which i wont pay) to now out of state /goans people trying to rent out property (that they brought with our hard earned money) and now asking stupid prices, no indian will pay that much for apartments and 60.000.+ for silly little houses. dream on people you sleep 12 to a 400rps room a night or in the back of a 4x4.
Sorry folks Goa is going down the pan very quickly and the crime rate is fast on the move only to get worse as they have had a bad season(even though the papers say different)so money is going to be tight for people of goa, but of course not for the fat cat government who have made millions of lakhs.
