Can't knock madera for the money for me. MRP Inc all taxes is now Rs225 & we have started boycotting the restaurants who charge anymore than RS500 for it. Rs450 is okay, if we really like the food in a place that overcharges for the wine & there are 4 of us dining, we have a successful guerilla tactic that I won't reveal which let's us dine there, drink there but doesn't leg them stick it up us for more than one bottle of over priced wine.

You can do deals with the restaurants, some will go as low as 350 rups and one will let you take your own, as they do not stock Maderia.

Talking Re: Monsoon entertainment

Anyone staying for the whole monsoon in North Goa should take at least one trip down South - The Pentagon in Majorda is open throughout the monsoon & Raj is an excellent host. A bit further South, Savica's set back from Vel Uddo beach, South of Benaulim is also open throughout the monsoon - Savio is a great guy & the food at his Zumbrai shack is always excellent & great value.

Regards

Gin i can help you with, although not the biggest fan, they do Blue Riband gin here at 135 odd rup's, and to me tastes like Gordons or any others i've tasted in my time. (Gin officianados dont shoot me down)

Personally I'd recommend the Old Monk brandy, cheap and goes down a treat
Ta mate
Ill give the old "Blue Riband gin" a bash, dont care too much if its not quite Gordons at that price, the Tonic and lemon slice hides a lot of mistakes, anyway better than the Aussie price here for a 700 mill bottle gin at 1,451.18 INR . Ill check out the Old Monk brandy/rum as well, matteof fact ill check eveything out thats drinkable.
"Go Troppo" as they say up in Darwin.

Invest RS120 in a bottle of honeybee brandy, get yourself some safe ice, kick back, relax, enjoy - just don't get too hung up on the whacky dreams you may get.

Yeh mate,I dont think I did really understand the Monsoon thing as you have it there in Goa.
Didnt really know the places actually close up tight like you said.
Thanks for explaining

Hey and thanks to all you guys for the booze tips, and where to go to beat this dreary monsoon thing.
It will be an experience I will savor as this pristine Aussie living does get a bit tiresome with all the rules, regulations that come with life here.

A bit off thread, but if any one is interested in escaping for a spell,if your not already aware,Air Asia flys into Kochi plus several other south Indian airports, and goes via KL its base,to Australia.
As an example,my fare, Gold Coast Australia to Cochin and return to Gold Coast departing Chennai ,Total fare return was only 460.00 AUD = 22,240.98 INR . [promo rate}
Thats with inflight meals, a malaysian AirAsia Sim card and airport transfers in KL .
Even an old bugger on a pommie persion could do that
The promo rates come up 4 or so times a year,so best to go on their e-mailing list to be first in.

Most of the activities you describe plus shacks aplenty simply do not exist during monsoon time......closed down or impossible to run.
Plenty of agents but most will be shut, and "locals" dont do these tours, unless you mean Indian tourists, and these days they are comparative big spenders!
On the booze front, Port wine is sweet and thin, not a north European taste usually, KP is 100% right about Blue Ribbon Gin (Blue Ribband is a chocolate biscuit!) and sadly Old Monk is a Rum, not a Brandy.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

By the way Nomad - if you're gonna give every type of booze a try - you'll be braver than me if you try the feni and urac (local moonshine come drain cleaner - or at least smells like drain cleaner!)
Welcome to BE and have a great time out there - don't forget your welly boots....

Hi All
Can anyone advise if Victor's Restaurant , Whispering Palms Road | Beach Road, Candolim, is up and about and cooking during the monsoon season?
I just saw such rave reviews in tripadvisor.com,I may have to go over budget and splurge for that one.
Ill be there July,I gather thats monsoon time as well?
Cheers all
