Just down loaded it for free and it seems to be as they advertised. It puts a new bar on your search engine and it seems to be easy to use.Google Ex Pat Shield and there you go ! I would do it straight away before the BBC closes them down. Read the article too. I paper, which is part of the Independent group.Page 26. top left hand corner.
There is an easier and free way which doesn't interfere with any of your other settings and involves NO software downloads. Just go to xroxy.com and nab one of the free UK proxy servers on there and away you go. You will need to configure your browser with the proxy settings provided - if you don't know how to do this, go to the 'help' section on your browser (firefox or IE etc) and type in 'proxy configuration' for step-by step help

Works for me. I live in Goa and am still watching the apprentice every week - a weekness of mine as is the Jeremy Kyle show

Tip - choose a proxy with the lowest latency you can find, and don't bother paying for one, free ones with low latency are just as good.

Once you have configured your proxy, a great test (to check if it's working) is to go to google.com - (and specifically .com) - not .co.uk etc) if your proxy is working you will be directed to the Google UK page, rather than the Google India page. Do not go on iplayer or ITVcatchup until you have performed the Google test. (Or else the BBC may get to know of your proxy IP address)

If you are using free proxys from xroxy.com as I do, you WILL have to change them often, every 2-3 days in my experience! You will also have to find a decent one which works every time. On xroxy.com some proxys require a username and password - just ignore these and reconfigure again (and again) - you will get one which works for free! Once you know how to configure your proxy settings on your browser then you can view exactly as you like. These so-called "Expat Shields" are merely a way of configuring your browser with a proxy - using software which you download which configures your browser for you and goodness knows what else! - and making money from you!

Best you learn to do it yourself!

If anyone's really stuck on this and doesn't know how to configure their browser with a proxy, then PM me and I will gladly help! I HATE to see people paying for things they can get for free!

Julia, Expat shield appears to be ad' funded - you don't pay for it, and I don't see that any of the proxies from xproxy or elsewhere are going to do any better - the test I posted (www.national-lottery,co.uk} is probably a tighter test than Google.

This is better as you are manually configuring your own browser with the proxy details, and not downloading anything that will otherwise mess with your computer. No adware etc. Great to have a choice though!

I meant to say that you DO NOT have to install or download ANY software whatsoever in order to view British TV. You can configure all settings yourselves. All you need is a UK proxy server, and the details. You can find UK proxy on xroxy.com

Can I make myself anymore clear?

I thought you needed at least an SSL client and unless you want to continually change your browser settings some way to switch in and out of proxy mode?

And remember what a proxy is - all of your internet traffic passes through someone else's computer - you want to be very sure who you pick as a proxy!

Although I have both a tv and laptop in Goa, I bought the tv so my oh can watch the British footie, the very few good programs on British tv in my opinion would not be worth the risk of compromising my internet connection and personal information by using a proxy.

Yes, I continually change my settings from proxy (to view iplayer and itvcatchup etc) to non-proxy (for all other sites). In Firefox it requires only 4 mouse clicks, and no typing, once you have set up your proxy.

And remember what the internet itself is! All your traffic is to an extent monitored by the Indian Govt while you're in Goa - far more to worry about than a proxy service! tee hee!

There undebatably will be some form of monitoring by the Indian Government as no doubt there is by every government however such is the volume of internet traffic they could employ the huge number of graduates they are producing each year and still not be able to monitor more than a small percentage of it.

Exactly! My point being that a little proxy service won't be significant in the grand scheme of monitoring! Don't worry about monitoring is my suggestion, (twas yours?) just do, and just proxy do and no-one will be any the wiser!

you risk far more than being monitored when you use an unkown proxy - SSL (you do use it - right?) will protedt you as far as the SSL server (which is fine if you set up SSL tunneling to your own computer or a trusted proxy), but a proxy picked at random from a public list is very likely to be malicious and they can see your unencrypted traffic!!!
As regards govt. monitoring, i would have to be very high on somebody's radar for them to bother breaking (non-proxy) 128-bit https traffic - and that includes pretty much all financial or sensitive sites.

Monitoring does not bother me. I do not know or understand all the technical stuff but I am careful about security and as using a proxy server sounds quite risky it is not something I would do especially as I do internet banking.

I used to use to this little gem to watch USA english speaking programs -

http://www.peerblock.com/releases/pu...ock-1.1.0-r518

Peer Block is a very well known and trusted IP masking application. See this Wikipedia article -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeerBlock

It works from the UK too.

It gives your computer a USA mask IP address instead of a UK one.

Expat shield gives you a UK / Isle of Man IP address - but it doesn't fool National Lottery, nor, for me, BBC iPlayer for 'copyright' programs.
