Yes, well done WALES - England got what they deserved which is nothing, they were very poor!

I'm disappointed as I was planning my late arrival in work on Monday, October 24th, after being out for beer & breakfast at 08:30am to watch (England in) the rugby world cup final (assuming they managed to win their semi final as well), followed by the Manchester derby at 12:45 & then the Chelsea game at 4pm before making my way to another pub for my tea before finally going home to bed!

Come on then, who's the tightest, or do you all look to Wales?

(Just avoid the violent ones, often with a motor-cyclist with a gun shown on the front!)

I think lots of people connected more with the East is East as it is more realistic (in terms of TV) and relevant than a seeing full blown Hindi film for the first time with no knowledge of India? Probably just me. Loved the film by the way and have yet to see West is West.

I also am confused by Muslim and Moslem????

Well they do say it's the Scottish, but not my experience. My parents are the most generous people I know.

I was told by a barman in Dublin though that they particularly though the English were tight. They said Scottish and Welsh were great tippers.

Heidi, Noni was speaking of teaching her grandchildren about Indian culture, East is East and West is West are about Pakistani culture it tells nothing about Indian culture, and also where 85% of the people are not Muslim. That is what I was trying to convey, (and failed miserably).:(

I enjoyed East is East too. Particularly the scene where the neighbour comes in and views the 'ugly' brides to be.

As I said above just 2 ways of spelling, due to translation from Arabic.

Yes great people; have actually just returned from a Sheffield friend's big 'O' birthday party, and as she has now moved to St Ives there were a lot of complaints about the distance to travel!!. The weather was wonderful though, people in the sea swimming (during the day).

Sorry Bipat - I know what you're saying.

I loved it, but it was also very sad, the bit with the son who was 'ousted' for being gay. Sadly this happens in way too many cultures.

Bipat, for Brits of my generation 'India' still means the subContinent, as Winston Churchill said "India is ... a geographical feature: like the equator"

Me too, the father was exactly like my paternal grandfather (Welsh!) - apart from a very slight difference in skin tone - he was a stoker so it would have been difficult to tell!

With your paternal grandfather being Welsh you should be pleased with the result of the Rugby to-day! Now hopefully to beat the Frogs next week.

I see what you are saying but would you not expect an expat in a particuilar country to know the difference in culture between that country and a neighbouring country?

We in UK are Europeans but are aware of differences beyween UK, Greece, and Finland.

In the Sunday Times, either last week or the week before there was a great article about Churchill & it featured photographs of Churchill hosting dinners with Joseph Stalin & I think Theodore Roosevelt (not Trueman) - it also talked about Winston being able to hold his drink, to the extent that he told the butler where he was staying that he wanted Sherry (I think) with his breakfast.

With the 'trade' of stoker, I bet went a great capacity for beer - purely for hydration purposes or course. I think about the foundry workers of Brightside in Sheffield & when their night shifts ended they'd head for the nearest boozer that opened at 6am to replenish the liquid they'd lost through sweat before heading home to bed.

Brought back memories, worked in the infirmary A&E, the usual issue 'kidney' dishes were a joke, used to run for a bucket for the 10+? pints that came up!!!!

Ha ha, 10+ pints is being kind, I bet some of those guys downed 20+ pints of 3.6% session beer.

Here's the quiz question I guess you will know the answer to:

What does Sheffield have in common with Rome?

Yes I edited the first pint number I put.
Presume it is the 'seven hills', I was young at the time so could manage the walk.

Yes it is, it was a good question 15 to 20 years ago. I liked Sheffield because it's good areas (Ranmoor & Dore) were still Sheffield - Manchester's good areas (Hale Barns etc etc) don't really strike me as Manchester - just Cheshire.

We are all wimps when you see what the youngster drink on a Saturday night, and the goings on in the city centers, we were never like that, but also got plastered (who me) and had a good time.

It is shocking what gets drunk: that thing called a Jaeger Bomb which is a shot of Jaegermeister in the bottom of a glass of something else that is then 'knecked' in one - no bloody surprise that they end up in A&E having their stomach pumped.

Re: Discussions & Rants

The entire philosophy of drinking is totally different now; when I was younger (I'm now 58) I would go out with friends and it may well be that one or more of us might end up drunk, but it wasn't planned for that to happen. Yes we planned to go out for a drink but not with the intention of getting totally rat arsed!
The young people of this current generation go out with exactly that intention, the start drinking at home with cheap (below cost) supermarket booze and from then on in they have but one intention, get as drunk as possible! Sadly it gets even worse when they venture abroad.
Frankly I don't understand it, yes there have been occasions, quite a few in honesty, when I've gone out for a drink and ended up drunk but I have never gone out drinking with the intention of getting drunk.

So many end up so drunk and not havng a clue or a care as to what happens. The police then get inundated with rape reports which either end up being geniune where they have been taken advantage of, or more often, the girls have had sex consensually but regret it the next day as had they been less inebriated would never have consented to such.
The problem does not just affect girls, but it is equally an issue for boys as well, who end up getting it on with a girl who is consenting then find themselves nicked afterwards as the girl was too drunk to consent. It's almost getting to the point where any young fella out on the pull needs to carry a consent form and get it signed before doing the deed !

Noni, I have been thinking about your post.
Why not get your grandchildren 'Lagaan', it's jolly, simplistic and gives a bit of history so ideal for children. Set in Victorian times, but Indian village life not that different now. Is a fun film about cricket.
(In my personal opinion a bit long, could have done with some editing, but you can fast-forward).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagaan

Amongst the mass rubbish some good films are still made, and just like Hollywood there are some real old classic gems.

I often wonder, also, how many the Police receive complaints of 'spiking'. Seems to be the excuse of over indulgence. Of course it wasn't the bottle of wine before you went out and all the shots in between vodka redbulls you had!
