What do you mean..."You may not want to go there" I`ve been in this shithole for eleven years, ten of them in a court case, involving these so called friendly people. Not forgetting the top class medical institutions, or of course the four lawyers who have robbed me, and others, blind.
I understand your interest in your friends`wellbeing, but there are lots of better places to go. Obviously you haven`t seen the beaches of late, you`ll be very disappointed. Having said that, hope your friend enjoys. Wally. |

Hi Heidigirl and Shasha
Slightly off topic, but welcome to BE. It's always good to have new members joining us. As you will see there is a lot of frustration at the moment with people owning Goan property which you will know from your parents problems, so I'm sure you can empathise with anyone in that situation. However do not let the frustration you see on here put you off either going to Goa or posting on this forum - everyone is welcome here. I still spend my winters there and enjoy it - despite the fact that I have a property, and all the grief that goes with it. For me, getting away from the horrid UK winter is worth it. I invited a friend over last season and she absolutely loved it, and wants to come back this coming season. By the way, if you do fly with Monarch, it is worth paying the extra to go Premium - for comfort alone - especially if you are on the long legged side!! Hope to see more from you. Enjoy Dread - x |

Yes my parents have bought property, and yes they are subject to the same problems and frustrations as everyone else but they try to be as positive as possible. Don't put people off visiting - especially when we work hard all year around for our visit, I thought Goa still had a lot to offer. Talk about put someone on a downer :( Please explain this Kamikaze need to own property in these outlandish ex colonial outposts/countries? All I hear from Thailand, and you guys/gals in Goa/India is all about the problems and rip off's one has to unfortunately confront continually. Does it not make more sense to long term rent,a very stressless choice? Thereby Leaving all your funds locked up and safe some where else civilised and untouchable. I realise there could be more to it than my simple suggestion, and that I may be missing something? I are aware in Malaysia and Indonesia, possibly Philippines one has to deposit a certain amount of funds in an approved account in the country you have selected, and after a few years you may buy property and obtain a residency. I are looking for a suitable location pour moi ,so are interested in all angles. Not criticizing, just enquiring! |

For many of us the rules were changed after we bought, now retrospective rules have ****** up lives and shattered members dreams. Together with the Visa situation. |

Together with the Visa situation. however rule changes certainly dont help anyone at all, least of all those poor buggers who have bought. Change of topic.... I learnt last week that you could no longer set up a buisness on a tourist visa, and had to be on a B visa to do this which to me seems a bit of a catch 22. Can anyone confirm this?? :) |

it is however quite a british desire/thing to buy property where ever they are, from my limited experience i have noticed other nationalities are much happier renting, this isnt a critcism, just something i have observed over the years. It seems Brits in particular have been brainwashed into thinking buying property is the be all........

Even guys that go to the extreme of marrying a local, still get screwed, not so much by the gov,but by the new wife or relatives. I got stories up my Wazoo! Westerers in general are all just big fat turkeys waiting to be plucked by the locals in a lot of these countries, and do you blame them. Poverty is no fun I guess  |

I can totally understand why people would want a home abroad if they fequently visit a place, it means that you always know what standard accomodation you will have and can leave stuff there instead of lugging it through airports and having to stress about overweight luggage. Try checking out UK land registry records and see the property portfolios of a lot of foreigners here ! Strangely enough - Indian folk appear to be great approprators of multiple properties in the UK, whether resident here or not, although several other nationalities aren't too far behind. And before I get shot down by the 'don;t dare comment on Indians' brigade, check the database ! Dread - x |

Dread everyone has an opinion, and from what i have seen in life, i have found this to be the case, clearly not something you agree with, but there you go, i didnt expect everyone to agree. Wonderful world isnt it when you can express your opinions :)

On the subject of charters and hols to Goa, a colleague of mine went into her local First Choice the other day and enquired about booking a tweeker to Goa in January next year, and they did everything they could to dissuade her from going there, advising Sri Lanka and other neighbouring places instead. I was actually going on from your point (as opposed to some disagreement) and sharing a fact I have had to unfortunately become very aware of during my working day. Actually if you look through the land registry data it is bloody frightening to see how small a percentage of property in the UK is actually owned by British people now.

Dread - x For example the "small percentage of property in UK owned by British" is this so? The only figures I have found this am are for London -- about 50% |
Re: Charter flights to Goa
Surely "about 50%" , so could easily be less than half, is a small percentage compared with what could have been expected?

Do wonder what the percentage is for Dehli, or Panjim? . German, US, Japanese, Irish and Arabs make up most of the foreign owners in London. |
